So, I got the following email from Tesla today:
Rule the Diamond Lane
A California HOV lane sticker gives you unrestricted access to congestion-free driving on some of the most trafficked roads in the country.
On January 1, 2011, hybrids with yellow HOV lane stickers will lose their access rights.
Only vehicles qualifying for a white HOV lane sticker will have unrestricted access through at least 2015.
The Tesla Roadster is the only electric vehicle currently in production that qualifies for a white sticker. Join the community of California Roadster owners whose white HOV lane stickers get them there faster.
So they say on January 1, 2011 Hybrids are out, but it seems there is a strong chance they will get extended through to July, 2011...

KCBS: Extension for Carpool Stickers
...The Assembly has voted 64-8 to let hybrids stay in the carpool lane until July 2011...
The Future of Carpool Stickers in CA
...the CA state Assembly approved legislation that amends and extends the carpool rules. SB 535 would phase out the yellow HOV decals for hybrids owners in July, 2011...
July e-News from Plug In America
...We continue to push for passage of California’s related SB535, as well. This bill would extend HOV access to plug-in hybrids such as GM’s Volt...
Apparently SB535 passed the assembly, and now is being considered by the State Senate.
