This is SOP at aggressive/well run companies. Management will be constantly probing for efficiencies and that often requires changes in people.
At the same time, valuable employees are constantly being recruited by competitors and other employeers. They ususally will offer sweet deals for a successful employee to jump ship and bring their knowledge, training and talent over to their team.
Jack Welsh (sp?) at GE famously would let go the bottom 10% of their employees with a purge every year. Kept everyone on their toes to remain above that level. Since Jack left, GE has continously lost market share and their stock price has plummeted.
