Dashcam and Self Incrimination

A post in a pedestrian warning system thread made me realize I had not given serious thought about what I would do if I did not want to turn over dashcam footage to the police. I've never had a dashcam before Tesla implemented the feature. Of course my plan is for dashcam to protect me from false claims. But everyone risks being a fault in an accident. And plenty of accidents are confusing and potentially unclear to the drivers as to what exactly happened.

I have two principals in play here that I'm trying to reconcile to a dashcam plan.

- If I am going to self-incriminate it is going to be thoughtfully and after the fact
- I don't make plans to overtly lie to people in official positions.

What are your thoughts?

I guess I'm unclear on what you think the situation will be specifically.

AFAIK you're not obligated to turn the footage over without a court order to do so though.

That said you might be legally obligated not to destroy it (and indeed produce it) if you're on the receiving end of a lawsuit or criminal charge where it's relevant.
