As i understand it pushing the back of the lever in activates a microswitch (or sensor of some sort) which is the equivalent to pressing the door open button inside the car, and it activates an electrical door popper mechanism (which also lowers the window slightly to break the seal I believe). But if there is no 12V power then pulling a bit harder on the handle activates a mechanical release mechanism.
