I think I remember another member mentioned that when trying to charge off a generator, that a ground rod needed to be installed. Not a huge deal but worth a test. 12kW is a good size, plenty to charge off a UMC.

You don't need a ground rod. There are generators that work with no modifications because they have the ground connected to the neutral (or a switch to achieve this). You can make an adapter plug to go between the UMC and generator outlet that has the ground shorted to neutral to work with generators that don't have this capability built in.

You also want a generator that produces a pure sine wave output (many generators don't). If it has a modified sine wave it would be wise to test it to make sure it works.
