Early Model 3 sub-frame steering issue costing thousands

I was not in any accident of any kind. I was driving in a parking lot when I heard a thunk in the front of the car. After that point, any time I turned the steering wheel to the right or left, I'd hear a loud friction sound. Tesla mechanic knew I had a 2018 when he heard the noise as if it was a known issue. Has to do something with a nut snapping off related to the sub-frame. Now I'm staring a 4k plus bill in the face.

Anyone else had this issue? Seems Tesla doesn't replace parts but full sub assemblies.
