I'd be willing to bet his empathy is fine. It's just hidden behind a grand mission and a social wall built by decades of bullies and haters and perhaps a little disdain that our species isn't better than it is.
We had the author, Ashlee Vance, in conversation with Chelsea Sexton and with a Q&A from TMC members at last year's TMC Connect 2015. I recently got around to editing that video together and am making it available to the public.
In the process of putting this together, I've effectively watched it dozens of times. However, I still find the conversation interesting.
I thought the book was interesting: seemed to be rushed (and that wouldn't be a shock), and lots of interesting details. It's what got me to buy some TSLA stock, which I'm looking forward to going up sometime.
Bottom line: the subject matter made the book worth reading, even if it wasn't the best writing.
