The metallic coating is on the glass to reject a large amount of infrared radiation. The side affect of this metallic coating is that it also blocks all but the strongest radar signals and almost all speed laser, which is infrared. It's so strong of a shielding effect, that tollway transponders have a problem working. The problem is so bad that the newer (post-8/2015) cars now have a shielding cutout to the right of the rearview mirror only for toll tags. Unfortunately, that area is painted black so mounting a radar detector there is also an exercise in futility.Anyone know why there's a coating on the glass?
Why does Tesla have it and other's done?

Additionally, if you have metallic/ceramic TINT in your car, the Max360 is going to have a hard time seeing the side and rear radar/laser.

I recently purchased the Escort Max 360. While I cannot test the range of the radar detector as compared to anther car, I can say that it does work. I have it mounted to the right of the rear view mirror. If you purchase the straight cord, It is possible to hide the power cord along the windshield, down the A pillar underneath the rubber rain strips, under the floor mat of the passenger foot well, and then plug it into the cigarette lighter. I was able to do all this without pulling out any trim pieces.

By the way, for anyone wanting to take off the radar detector to store inside the car, this case from Best Buy fits it perfectly.
Please see This Post before making that decision.
Thanks for reminding me of that. I should have clarified, I already have the Passport Max (with the standard coil cord) in my current car and will not purchasing a new detector. Figured I might as well get this cord for $30 and try it out in the Tesla. Otherwise the radar becomes a total waste to me.
The quicker you put that thing on eBay, the better
I have a Bel Pro 500 that I'm using in my Volt, and I'm crossing my fingers that I can use it in the Model ≡ when it comes out. Hopefully, there's a small patch of windshield that has the metallic coating cut out.
What causes the shielding cutout not to work on a Model S with recent production date?

The cutout is small and as mentioned elsewhere it's not transparent in more recent cars. Of course this seems to change from car to car, so maybe you'll get a car that will work fine for you (on my VIN25xxx seemed to work fine, VIN84xxx not at all (there cutout is there, so the toll pass works, but way to high and too small for the Valentine One radar detector to work well).
The shielding cutout has black paint over it. It works fine with toll tags, but zero amount of laser will get through it. You might get some radar through it, but if you put the 360 in that location, it can't see the rear of the car, and the roofline and A-pillars and rear view mirror block most of the sides. The Max360 is really meant to be mounted much lower on the windshield which renders it pretty useless on the Model S.

Ah, that makes sense Chris.
Mine is VIN 123xxx, so fingers crossed they've done something to fix this recently. I take delivery tomorrow and plan on trying it out before I get rid of the radar detector.
Is this solution still working well for you? My delivery is tomorrow and I will probably set mine up the same way if you haven't had any problems.

My Escort 360 appears to be working when mounted in this location. However, what I cannot say is what effect, if any, the windshield has on the range of the detector.
