I screwed up and traded in a 2018 Model S for a 2023. I have several issues, the biggest being that I have to open the Tesla app to get the key to work. I set up the key on my wife's phone and that phone doesn't have the issue. My phone is a Note 20 Ultra 5G. Is there a trick to get it to work?

You have to keep the app open to use the phone as a key.
Could your wife’s phone have a widget or background process that keeps the tesla app open allowing for auth?

I do often close all apps. She doesn't do that. I see now there is an option to lock open apps.

No you don't. Your phone doesn't even have to be unlocked for it to function as PaaK.
Go into your settings though and make sure that whatever data & battery saving settings you can find for the Tesla app are disabled. You don't want any of that junk ending processes behind the scenes. Typically, that's a good thing for apps you're not using but on this app (and similar apps doing important things in the background) you want them free to run 24/7.
