With huge US Government subsidies and a strong backing from Heavy Truck makers hydrogen is destined to make a big impact, for good or not:

Few people grasp the enormity of our current Hydrogen deficit. Using hydrogen to displace fossil fuels doesn't make any sense until that deficit is gone.

In addition to the practical problems and inefficiencies with hydrogen, its effective Global Warming Potential is about 11 x CO2. Leaks and purging are trouble.

Is hydrogen dead?
Yes, except for specialised uses such as steel-making. If anyone needs a liquid fuel (aircraft, ships?), pressurised alkanes (methane), ammonia are much more sensible choices. Even then, niche.
