I’m flying to Paramus, NJ to take delivery of my P85D tomorrow at noon, then driving it back to western NC. I’m moderately paranoid that there will be some pain associated with inspecting the car, or getting paperwork done, or finding out that there’s a charging problem while at the first Supercharger stop on my way home, or something that prevents my years-long obsession from finally being realized. I know it’s mostly the negative stories you read on this forum and I’m trying to remember that most of the success stories go unsung.

Any last words of wisdom? Things you wish you had known when you took delivery of a used Tesla?

I picked up my MS there a month ago. They have superchargers in their parking lot so you can test it before you leave. I had a mostly positive experience there while taking delivery. I took my time inspecting the car, and did not feel rushed at all. Most of the small issues I found with my car are getting fixed by Tesla.

curious about the "small issue". did you take delivery and arranged for the "small issues" to be fixed later, or you left the car there and picked it up later?

It’s been a few months, but just in case anybody finds this thread while searching about payment options: I paid the full amount with a personal check and they didn’t bat an eye. The check cleared the next day.

Inside my account it said I could pay via ACH transfer or certified check, so I showed up with a certified check. But my delivery specialist told me the day before my scheduled delivery it could have been a personal check. They should definitely make that more clear early on in the purchase process.

What’s more, my delivery advisor specifically told me I could not use a personal check, that it had to be certified. Which turned out to be false because a personal check worked out just fine for me.

I would just use the online Tesla portal to pay what is due. or if you are weary of paying in full in advance, pay down a substantial amount through the portal and then use a personal check when for the balance when you pick up the car. or on second thought make a second payment to the online portal while you are at the showroom for pickup.

I don't think that it is a good idea at all to pay any substantial amount in advance. Just make your payment upon satisfactory inspection and delivery of the car. That's the way it has been done for ages in almost every other car buying or even general retail setting. If they give you grief about it, just walk away.

Just to add another data point, I paid with personal check when I picked up my car and no one said anything.

it's one of the reasons why I financed. I paid 10% + tax sight-unseen -- but the big check was sent by TD auto finance.

I recommend this route. even if you have the money in the bank.

pay the off a week or 2 after delivery.

your credit score will thank you.

everybody wins.

I wouldn’t pay for the car until you’ve decided to accept it. If it isn’t right you should walk away. If there is something wrong with it and you think it’s probably OK, take a day to think about it. Then don’t ask them, tell them you need the 24 hours. A night’s lodging in a hotel is very little compared to this car purchase. Take all the time you need to examine the car. If they are rushed, that isn’t your worry. The car should be clean and dry. Don’t buy a wet or a dirty car. They may not let you test drive it.

I paid with a personal check. I don’t think I gave them any other option.

You are the purchaser here. You are the decision maker. You have the power.
