I don't know about Tesla but here's a reference from Ford:

"...a Ford Focus typically uses roughly 300 chips, whereas one of Ford’s new electric vehicles can have up to 3,000 chips."

A Tesla has 3,500 or more chips in it, while a combustible engine has 1,000.

Seems really high! I wonder what they are defining as a "chip"?

Forgot to mention ---- When the grand kids ride with us we have a few (even the ruffled ones,) but it's easy enough to vacuum them up. The grease they leave behind is another matter...

Gives you some idea - Tesla have consolidated a LOT of functionality into fewer ECU's as discrete parts. Doesn't mean there are less "chips" in total but you can hear Munro and his team talk at length about the advantages Tesla has, given a clean sheet design.
