All the articles talking about this are hyping the vehicle to grid aspect or being able to draw significant AC power from the Model 3/Y (and presumably other Tesla vehicles eventually).

Basically, an engineering who reverse engineered the Model 3 on board charger, the circuit board that converts AC to DC to charge the car at up to approx. 12 kW, has found that the circuit is completely bidirectional. Meaning you should be able to extract that amount of power from the car with just a software change (and presumably some external simple hardware box that provides safety ... you wouldn’t want to flip a software switch in the car and electrocute someone at the other end of a cable).

Now, V2G is nice and useful, especially now that solar power is creating this enormous duck curve that has become a real problem (here in CA, the cheapest electricity is available Weekdays from 10:00am until 2pm!).

But what this also enables is significant external power that would replace small portable gas powered generators that people use for all sorts of reasons. Construction contractors. Bounce house operators for picnics. Beach or camping entertainment.

Tesla poised to unlock vehicle-to-grid abilities with 'bi-directional' charging systems
