My car lost all data!

So, I walk out of the mall on a perfectly pleasant day with the temperature around the mid-60s. Walk up to the car and there is no response. Take out my card and 'scan' it a couple of times before the car unlocks.

Get in. The screen is dark. Ok, I have seen the dark screen before and could still start driving the car.

But not this time. No drive forward, or reverse. Try a rest. Nothing. Try reset again after a short while, the screen wakes up. All driving stats are reset to zero. My car name is gone. All settings lost. Just the odometer mileage shows the number of miles driven.

Drive down to the service station. The technician thinks there is an issue with one of the onboard computers. Apparently, there are three. Tells me that it is not possible to recover the old data. He needs to look into this since this was a first for him. Gives me a loaner and send me on my way. It's 3 days since.

What gives? Anyone else out there have had a similar issue?

Seems like they should have cloud backup for the data like with an iPhone.

One would hope so, but apparently not. That would make recovery much less tedious.
What bugs me most is losing my lifetime kWh/h stats.

Did you get back your car? How long did it take? What was the solution provided?

Mine didn't lose data, the Autopilot computer died, part of the several computers, so it had basic driving just no automated functions, emergency breaking, autopilot, speed limit signs, auto lights or wipers, etc. Actually got a text as I type this from Tesla, they're still working on it after swapping out the new computer, hope it's the new version 4 FSD computer.

You as well, I've actually been waiting two weeks but I travel a lot and the computer was ordered a week ago. Finally got back home and dropped it off at Tesla service yesterday.

New computer; it happens. Apple's Mac book pro brand new was replaced. We had two of them from our company that was bad.

Luckily the computers died when the car was parked. For real redundancy, not only data redundancy throughout, the computer and control system also needs to have full failover physically.

Incidentally, is there any possibility of a critical computer failure which might make the car suddenly immobile while driven?
I sure hope not! That could be catastrophic!

redundancy and a cloud backup definitely should be expected. a car is a lot more critical than a mac. at least you could drive it, thank God. TBH, I have not even thought about backing up my data.

Data backup and recovery should definitely be a possible feature, given all the data constantly being collected. At least the features I have personalized, like my car name, profile settings and driving stats, radio settings...
I wonder why it is not possible as of now.

You could connect up a service like CARMIQ and see what data is visible. I'm pretty sure a lot of data is stored in Tesla's computer systems. Not sure that they have a procedure to push it back to the car.

No, the car will still drive if the computers fail. In the end it has a mechanical steering wheel and breaks so you can come to a controlled stop of it gets that bad.

I'm just kidding, I'd be bummed to lose those too. Hope it gets sorted quickly. Luckily you're still under warranty - I shudder to think about stuff like this happening out of warranty. How old is your car?

On the plus side, imagine if you'd been stuck with an ICE instead! Bet the model S seems pretty great compared to that

Yup, driving the S is nice. More cushy! But surely miss my 3!
Somehow, I like the driving experience on my 3, better!
