Not permitted to drive CPO as part of delivery inspection??

I am afraid there is no easy answer to this problem. The policy now seems to be no test driving, and you have to purchase the car, and have all your docs and insurance in place before you show up.

One possibility is to have the delivery specialist drive it with you in the car, before you accept.

another thought is to have a second, or even third, option picked out and be ready to reject and buy a backup.

I guess it depends on the delivery center and the delivery person. I was able to test drive around the block thru major streets when I picked my MS in July from Tempe Arizona SC
If Tesla is anything, it’s they are consistently inconsistent.

And unfortunately, that’s not really meant to be funny.
Their business model is in the service of their cash flow first, and everything else second, third and so on.

If they let a customer drive a new or used first, and problems are found, then a normal customer would either refuse the car outright, request things are fixed BEFORE another test drive, and then paying, or negotiate price down to accept blems and wear, or even negotiate down and still refuse to pay until negotiated items are dealt with first. So the car stays on the wrong side of the balance sheet for them.

Tesla, as all businesses, do not want the customer to be in control.

I understand it, don’t like it, and wish Tesla believed in their product more.

Oh, and Tesla saying you can return the car in 1 - 3 days if you don’t like it, while nice, is still psychologically and practically difficult to do for most people. Tesla knows this, and takes advantage of it.

Anyway, I asked if I could drive the car as part of the inspection, I was told that this was not permitted, because the car "is not registered." However, no dealer cars are registered prior to purchase - isn't that the purpose of dealer plates? I was then told that there was a 3 day return policy and anything would be fixed under warranty. Closely reading the forums here, I know that there is no return policy for used cars, and I corrected the associate. He then checked with his manager, who confirmed that he was mistaken about the return policy and also that I wouldn't be able to drive the car as part of the inspection.

I find it hilarious these tesla employees just make sh*t up in the spot. It's like the company hires people who have no clue and they don't bother to train them. And they keep spreading so much misinformation. It's gotten to the point where you cannot trust anything that comes out of a low level tesla employee's mouth at all.

I was not allowed to test drive mine when I picked it up. Drove home about 3 hours away without issue. A few weeks went by and I noticed some squeaks and the sun roof vibrated when opening. Tesla sent a mobile tech out to correct the issues.
Really how long before they sent a technician out? Any documentation to show this? Find it strange how vastly different owners experiences vary so much. Especially when the ones that post of such great service, disagree with anyone who post of negative ones. Feels like the owners with positive experiences almost feel like marketers/lobbyist of Tesla. Hmm

As an update, still waiting for delivery. Tesla is being accommodating in getting the small bumper damage fixed before delivery but it is now about 4 weeks from when I clicked "buy now" on the website.

Assuming 2% return after taxes on 60000 that is $100 bucks you lost... maybe you should have accepted it as is. Hard to do on principle, I know...

Ha - good point! But the money is sitting in my checking account earning no interest (I transferred it from HY savings the day after I clicked "buy" - silly me!). I'm also paying for insurance about $180/month... I thought it would take a day or so....

Conspiracy theory much? I would reread the statement, there is no disagreement but a sharing of experiences. Living in an area with a low volume of Teslas helps out a lot. While living in Omaha I've had the mobile guys out twice. A few months of ownership and my battery died, they towed it to the Kansas City service center and replaced the pack. This happened on a Thursday and the car was redelivered the next Tuesday. Just like all things in life, your experience may vary.

When you actually get the car and have paperwork showing that delivery date I’d call the insurance company and have them adjust the policy start day to the newer accurate date.

Not quite. The biggest expense is not the opportunity cost of the money but the depreciation. So if you set aside $60K for a car and it takes over a month to get that car, your car has already depreciated about $1,000 in the month that you were not able to drive the car. And yes, you can add that $100 bucks you calculated to that and make that $1,100... I realize some of this is debatable based on how good of a "deal" you got when you bought the car but it is never good if you have to wait weeks to actually have the car you "bought" when with most car dealers you can drive the car off the lot the same day or within days so you can start enjoying the car right away.

PD, you are correct, but I did not want to the depress the OP with that, or what 60K would do in a 401K with employer match...

AND, BTW, MS depreciation seems to have reversed last few days...though I am sure this is temporary.

As an update (I am OP) - I took delivery of the car today. The delivery team was really fantastic. They had the car polished and waiting in the inside showroom (see pic) . It looks immaculate. They had the small scratches repaired at a local body shop before I took delivery.

Inside was thoroughly detailed and spotless. They even included a brand new charger and programmed 2 keys. They were delivering a brand new P100D next to me and honestly except for the pre-facelift nose on my car you would be hard pressed to tell which was new and which was used. Paperwork was smooth.

Drove the car home and it seems flawless. I couldn't be more pleased with how they followed though. For those of you considering a used model S, don't let the long wait (in my case about 30 days) dissuade you. It will be worth it in the end. For what it's worth, I never did test drive the car. Thanks for all your advice along the way.
