P3D+ Red/White, Config --> Scheduled Delivery in 12 days, but older VIN

I configured the car on 08/21, delivery is scheduled for 09/02. Significantly faster than I expected, I definitely understand the luck involved, and other factors such as location and config.

One thing that's worrying me is that the VIN (55XXX) seems older than what I'm seeing being assigned to people in the last one-two weeks. From the tracker data, it looks like other 55XXX VINs were assigned in the July/Aug timeframe and deliveries mostly already done before now, even more so for deliveries within California.

Any ideas on how I should read the seemingly older VIN? The most worrying possibility being somebody else having refused delivery for the same car. What set of questions should I ask Tesla reps to be transparent about this?

Are VINs but sequentially?

Thanks. Any suggestions on how I can go about finding that out? Are Tesla reps upfront enough to just give a straight answer if asked directly?

I wish I knew. No experience with it, just read on here that they might do that.

It's a red car. I own a red Tesla. It's likely been repainted in some part after someone rejected it. Find a good detailer to go with you to pickup or better yet examine before you have paid.

A good detailer can make it perfect or very close to it, if it was retouched after the factory.

Then again it could be something completely different, but the multi-coat red seems to be a tough color.

I had similar concerns with my VIN I picked up last week. (56XXX) My understanding is that they are not entirely sequential. It is possible that they are on their second "batch" of P3D+. (Mine was a P3D)

I was happy to find that mine was built in August and certainly seemed fresh off the factory floor.

I am happy with fit and finish. Panel gaps are all symmetric. My only complaint was the dirt on delivery. I think they got it fresh off the truck. I am a little baffled as to why they can't spend 15 minutes hand washing it and 5 minutes spray detailing it prior to delivery.

I am very particular about paint as my hobby is detailing. There were four superficial scratches that I found on delivery that they took care of while I waited. I did my own polish and correction and found about three tiny areas of trapped contamination under the paint. These are all in the 1 mm range.

You have been given HORRIBLE advise in this thread, mostly.

They are not built in order. Many 55k Vins were just built in August.. as in.. this month.

No rejected car is any less valid than any other new car on any dealer lot. Dealers receive up to 50% of their vehicles with some form of cosmetic damage and they fix it themselves and never disclose it.

It has to exceed a certain dollar amount of the total cars MSRP before have to tell you.


Don't sweat it. If anything, it's a better car because it's been re-examined with a fine tooth comb.

FYI - we got our Model 3 today. A very positive experience.

The car was in excellent shape. No paint defects, at least none that my admittedly untrained eye could spot. White interior was clean. The only thing we noticed was a slightly higher gap between one of the trunk pillars and the rear panel. It was fixed on the spot.

Our delivery center agent, Yohan was extremely helpful, and earnest in taking care of everything we brought up, which included the panel gap thing above, but also my questions about free supercharging.

On the way back home, the car drove like a dream.

You can always look at the doord sticker on delivery for the build date, or ask the delivery specialist if they have the build date when they give you the VIN. They aren't sequentially using vins if you notice the reported vins on the Bloomberg tracker. They obscure them slightly, you can tell as they registered far more vins the past month than they could have possibly produced. This helps keep the day to day production rates slightly obscured from the public.
