Finally got around to finish listening to the EVA suit press conference... they mentioned that that the Dragon capsule for the mission will talk to the Starlink constellation via direct laser links...

Don't remember discussing that here anyway, but that's very cool...

Yep, all sorts of space laser comms are happening now. In fact the NASA Psyche mission has a demonstration laser communications system on it as well. For near earth comms, communications to Starlink sats via laser makes sense. For deep space, they should stick a relay laser satellite at a Lagrange point. Deep space laser comms promises 100x data transmission rates over radio.

It's all in testing/engineering phases now (even the Dragon version), but in 10 years, maybe we'll be able to ditch radio for space communications.
