Did you find out why the PS stopped working in the end?

Well I am going to pick it up tomorrow and will get more info then, but in the end they replaced the steering rack. I will update again if any new interesting info comes to light.

Well it was apparently the steering rack controller (electronics) which was intermittently failing to wake up so had obviously developed some fault. This is attached to, and an integral part, of the steering rack which was all changed.
The mechanic said the rack will be returned to the supplier for analysis.
He also said this has been seen before and is a known potential fault (although I have no idea how common).
