Real MPH charging experiences

According to what I have read, the batteries charge more slowly near the top. As a practical matter, I have seen this reflected in the mi/hr charging information on the car. However, I have a TED system, and the car continues to draw roughly the full 10kW (40A at 240V) even when "topping off." I have a Volt too, and you can see the charge current trail off at the end of the charge. If the charger is delivering less current to the batteries as the system is nearing full, then "Where, o where, is the excess current going?" Apologize if this has already been addressed in another thread, but searching this topic was challenging, and this was the closest thread.
