regen braking vibration grinding noise

going down a steep hill, I let off the accelerator. I expected regenerative braking, but the car started vibrating and making a noise like gear grinding. It happened twice and didn't happen again, but it is concerning

Anyone else have had this experience? It was about 28F out, we had been driving 10 or 15 min. No snowflake on, but I think we had received a regen temp reduction message.

What were the road conditions? It could have been the traction control/stability control kicking in if the rear wheels started slipping during reduced regenerative braking.
