If you can get at the hardware and spend enough time and resources, you can “crack” pretty much any consumer technology. See the FBI and iPhones, which they eventually got into despite Apple refusing to cooperate. So as with most Tesla “news” this is basically a nothing burger.

I wonder who funded this research? Tesla has a fairly lucrative program to reward people who find bugs, so it’s interesting these guys chose the route they did.
