With the increasing focus on electric drive vehicles among the world's automakers, it would seem logical to assume that sooner or later, someone is going to build a lithium ion battery plant near Detroit to supply the needs of the big three.
One such possibility is the Korean company Samsung, who is rumored to be considering locating just such a plant in the vicinity of "Motor City." If there is any truth to the rumor, it would strongly suggest that the tide has, indeed, turned for electric drive -- hybrid, plug-in, and battery -- vehicles, assuming, of course, that we're talking about large format-type cells and not lap-top computer grade cells. The former would clearly be for automotive applications, the latter for consumer products; although these could certainly be used in EV's as demonstrated by Tesla, AC Propulsion and other small manufacturers.
