Samsung to Make Batteries in Detroit?

From the rumor mill, by way of EV World. . .

With the increasing focus on electric drive vehicles among the world's automakers, it would seem logical to assume that sooner or later, someone is going to build a lithium ion battery plant near Detroit to supply the needs of the big three.

One such possibility is the Korean company Samsung, who is rumored to be considering locating just such a plant in the vicinity of "Motor City." If there is any truth to the rumor, it would strongly suggest that the tide has, indeed, turned for electric drive -- hybrid, plug-in, and battery -- vehicles, assuming, of course, that we're talking about large format-type cells and not lap-top computer grade cells. The former would clearly be for automotive applications, the latter for consumer products; although these could certainly be used in EV's as demonstrated by Tesla, AC Propulsion and other small manufacturers.

Right now, most Lithium Ion cells go into small electronics (laptops, etc), and all of these are made in Japan/China/Taiwan, etc. So it makes sense that most Lithium Ion production is in Asia, and no doubt is a big factor as to why the Tesla ESSes are built in Thailand.

Naturally, if consumers of the cells appear in a new area, somebody's gonna set up shop. With all the Chevy Volt hype, it's no surprise Samsung is talking about Detroit. If Tesla is successful, they might start talking about Albuquerque next :)
