Should Model S get new electromagnetic windshield wiper system?

"A recently published patent application from Tesla has revealed that the electric car maker is designing a stealthy, unconventional windshield wiper system that seems particularly tailor-fit for the company’s upcoming halo car: the next-generation Roadster. Apart from looking the part of a futuristic wiper assembly for a futuristic vehicle, Tesla’s patent also allows optimizations in range.

The disclosed electromagnetic wiper system may include a linear actuator that may include a guide rail and an electromagnetic moving block. The guide rail may include a plurality of permanent magnet bars that may be disposed horizontally along a curvature of the windshield of the vehicle. The electromagnetic moving block may act as an electromagnetic train, and may include a plurality of perforations and at least an electromagnetic coil that surrounds the plurality of perforations in the electromagnetic moving block. "

Speculation is that it will probably go on the new Roadster 2020. But I think it would be amazing on a retrofit Model S.

Wipers are definitely a weak point in the S's otherwise stellar safety package.

In my opinion the wipers are not the weak point but the rain detection by camera which is beta since more than one year.

The incorporation of all that complex hardware for a windshield wiper system seems for fitting for the Semi than the 2020 Roadster.

No you are not...but I live in SoCal, and rarely drive in rain. Usually drive only on cloudy days or at night, to avoid yellowing the MCU, and covered in the garage at all times to protect against Cosmic Rays.

If these tracks are anything like the Model S sunroof, would you still want it? Also, no way that thing could move fast enough to be useful. Keep in mind many companies file many patents for things they never make. It's a defensive thing.

Why would would anyone need this? And why is Tesla designing this?

Who cares about wiper performance or seeing out the windshield after all Teslas get FSD this coming year?
