SMS double press to reply/dismiss

If I try to send an SMS voice reply, and I mess it up, it says "double press to retry" or sometimes to dismiss a message I got it says "double press to dismiss" I've tried quick taps, long presses, but it seems like the very first time I make any touch on screen it does the primary action like send..

I feel like this used to work, is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

You have to press or double press the right button on the steering wheel, not the screen. I too would like it to be either as I prefer the touch screen to the wheel buttons.
