Tail light assembly does not remain illuminated with headlights

My driver side tail light assembly does not remain illuminated when either the headlights are on or when unlocking the car. They turn on very briefly (< 1sec) then turn and remain off. The outer lights on the assembly function as they should when applying the brakes or turn signal. I also notice while looking at the avatar on the dash, while braking, the whole assembly lights up very briefly then turn off. So it's like they assembly is trying to remain illuminated but doesn't. Another thing is that I constantly get condensation in the liftgate light of this assembly. So, I'm thinking that the condensation is causing a short circuit or overall greater load, thus preventing the light to remain on.
I plan on getting the assembly replaced, but doesn't anyone know the cause of this and/or have a fix so I can have the light working for the time being?
