Tesla's new Charge on Solar keeps waking the vehicle up every hour, even though there is insufficient excess solar to support charging.

Below is the current state of the Powerwall, at only 89% full. It has not yet begun to charge the vehicle today.

But the vehicle has been waking up every hour since 6am as shown by my 12V battery monitor. I have not driven or accessed the vehicle from the App today.

The vehicle should not be awake until the Powerwall is full and there is sufficient excess solar to charge it.

ChargeHQ does not wake the vehicle until there is enough solar to begin charging. I don't understand why Tesla Charge on Solar needs to do this.

After a few more days, here is an update.

Charge on Solar continues to wake the vehicle every hour on the hour, even when excess solar is not available. From my 12V battery monitor, you can see this happening:

And what's really annoying is that if excess solar becomes available at a point between these wake-ups, it doesn't get used until the next hour. This graph is one I made of my Powerwall system. The batteries got fully charged at 13:30 but the first vehicle didn't start charging until 14:00. This vehicle needed only 20 minutes to reach the charge limit, and stopped about 14:20. But the second vehicle didn't start until 15:00 on it's next hourly wake-up cycle, and then charged for about 30 minutes. Had this vehicle needed more charging, the wasted time from 14:20 to 15:00 and also the delayed start of the first vehicle from 13:30 to 14:40, means nearly 50 minutes of excess solar went to the grid instead of the vehicle.

But what is most concerning of all this is how they implemented a new "key" for the Powerwall to access the vehicle. I do not understand why Tesla did this, as ChargeHQ does not need a "key" to access the vehicle, only a token for the Tesla API.

This Powerwall "key" is what is waking up the vehicle every hour, and it shouldn't be doing that especially since the Powerwall knows when it has excess solar or not.

On top of that, and even more significant than any of the aforementioned problems, is that this "key" UNLOCKS the vehicle!

Every hour when the Powerwall wakes up the vehicle, it is UNLOCKED and can be accessed until it goes back to sleep, even without a phone key or keycard. During a few of the wake-up cycles, I went out to the vehicle without opening the phone app or having a phone key or keycard with me, and I was able to open the door and access the vehicle.

While I keep my vehicles in a locked garage, this is completely unacceptable way to implement Charge on Solar. It seems Tesla just threw this together without much thought at all, and there are some very serious problems with it. If you are using Charge on Solar and don't park in a secure location, check to see if your vehicle is periodically unlocking. Activate PIN to Drive if you don't have that already turned on.

All these problems with what should be a simple and useful feature are sending me back to using ChargeHQ.

Tesla, if you're reading this, please forward the information above to the development team. They really need to address these issues!

Seems pretty safe to say this feature is half-baked at best.
Now I am kind of glad that mine doesn't work.

I did have a humorous chat with tech support this morning trying to figure out why it wasn't working. During this chat they simultaneously told me that my Powerwall firmware did not support charge on solar and that I had the latest firmware. I had no response to that circular logic, other than to laugh, so I left it at that.

I mean, both of those could be true. Tesla phone reps dont have the ability to push newer firmware to your tesla device than its already assigned. It can absolutely be true that you dont have the firmware that supports this feature, and that there is no newer firmware THEY can activate for you (meaning you have to wait till your system is upgraded).

I dont work for tesla or anything, but powerwall firmware updates dont seem too different from the vehicle ones.

I also dont think you are missing much, though, especially with this information from @power.saver . I hope someone from Tesla sees it and can submit information to the right people.

I'm thinking the "charge on solar" has something to do with one of my gateways (the one it is paired with) suddenly stopping solar production. Solar stopped producing about 2 pm yesterday on that gateway - and the only new thing I've done is enable charge on solar about 2 days ago. I got a message it was going to start charging on solar this AM but that doesn't make any sense since there's no solar production since about 2 pm yesterday. I see my powerwall has drained to 17% (set at 20%). I'm guessing there are still software issues. Have removed this feature and will reboot the gateway shortly - I'm hoping that brings solar back online - both inverters are blinking slowly green which is their normal status. Gateway is on 23.12.11

This ended up being an error on the inverter but the first time I've ever had any issues with my install. probably may not have anything to do with this but coincidentally the same array that was paired to the charge on solar. Gateway is on 23.12.11 (other one was Gateway is on 23.12.10). Leaving this feature off for now....
