Blog Tesla Could Soon Deliver 400 Miles Per Charge

“It will not be long” before Tesla will offer an electric car with 400 miles of range, Chief Executive Elon Musk said this week at the company’s shareholders meeting.

Musk didn’t elaborate on on a specific timeline, but some Tesla watchers believe updated batteries with such capability may arrive by the end of the year. The 2019 Model S is capable of 370 miles on a single charge.

Musk also took a moment to flex Tesla’s leadership in battery design.

“No electric car has exceeded the range of the first Model S that we came out with in 2012,” Musk said. “It’s a testament to the Tesla engineering team to be able to have made a car, seven years ago, that still has not been exceeded in range.”

And it seems as if Tesla believes it will be able to engineer significantly more range in the next couple years. Tesla originally touted the second-gen Roadster slated for 2020 as capable of 620 miles. It’s not clear, however, if the vehicle remains on the same production timeline.

Let's set a Kona (or Niro) and a 2012 Model S (with brand new 85 kWh battery pack) off at 65 MPH and see which one stops first. Guarantee it's not the Tesla. Rated (self-certified) range is slightly lower than the Tesla, but those Korean cars are far outpacing their rating (10-20%), while you'd be lucky to ever reach 265 miles in a Tesla. This is an extremely disingenuous claim from Musk. I have a 2014 S and 2019 Niro EV. Very happy with both and a big Tesla fan, but some of the things Musk says are just plain wrong. Remember "Brakes will last the life of the car!"??
 
PS - anyone had to replace brakes yet? (Aside from racing track driving)
Yes, I got my first squeaks from the front brakes at 75k. Rears squeaked at 98k. You can get new drilled/slotted/dipped rotors and ceramic pads on Amazon for <$200/axle and do it yourself. I made the mistake of having a place do the fronts and it cost me $1000! They got all OEM parts direct from Tesla... $500 for the rotors!!
 
His 400 mile car comment was immediately following talking about how the 2012 Model S range hasn't been exceeded by a competing car manufacturer. Soon takes on a different context when you are talking about a 7+ year time frame right before saying "soon"

I'm sure it's coming. I'm sure compared to other car makers it'll be soon. I'm sure people will complain all over the internet and in real life when it isn't out before July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and possibly even Christmas and New Years.

I totally wouldn't call it late if it happened next spring in 2020. I totally would expect Europeans to have to wait longer than that (about a quarter of a year delay for demand to leave enough for sending to overseas markets).

You must use your brakes a helluva lot more than I do (MX). I've got 30k on it with no detectable pad or rotor wear at all.
