Tesla plans to start charging $1,000 for black paint next month, and will make white the standard color offered for free.
Chief Executive Elon Musk announced the change in a tweet. He didn’t elaborate on what motivated the decision from Tesla.
Tesla originally made black the standard color option on Model 3 and charged a $1,000 for a different color. It’s expected that Tesla will introduce a new version of white, which would differ from the current pearl white offering.
Tesla has made several changes to pricing recently. Last month, the Model S sedan was reduced by $3,000, while the Model X SUV received a $2,000 cut. Those changes come after the Model S and Model X received in March average price increases of less than 2 percent. The company also raised the price of its top-selling Model 3 by $400 last month, pushing the base price to $35,400.
