I think this is what's happening recently.

Longs are buying, shorts are buying (forced), new investors are buying. Especially when longs buy Calls, there are not many sellers. Those who have been happy to sell naked Calls to meet the demand now are in big trouble. So it's very easy for the stock to move higher.

Those who love shorting already shorted TSLA in the past 10 years. It's difficult for shorts to recruit new shorts. Also, as news spread, who wants to short a stock right before it joins S&P500 index?
