Tesla’s Autopilot Hits a Billion Miles of Engagement

Tesla has passed one billion miles driven on Autopilot, the company said.

The milestone was announced in a tweet. A billion miles is more than 40,159 trips around the Earth and 10 trips to the Sun.

That number represents 10% of all miles driven by Teslas since 2012, when the Model S was first launched. Autopilot, however, did not become available until 2015.

Autopilot is now available on all new cars with a $5,000 activation fee at the time of purchase or $7,000 if selected later.

The increasing number of Autopilot miles logged is meaningful in that Tesla’s neural networks are being trained to improve its self-driving system. Updates to Autopilot are planned for next year, including new hardware that will aid in the rollout of the company’s Full Self-Driving system.
