Timing delivery for early April & home delivery

Hi all - I'm planning to finally place an order for a Model 3 LR AWD after having reserved on day 1 in 2016. I'd like to ideally time the delivery for early April, once winter has passed. Any thoughts on when would be the best time to place the order? Delivery timing is saying 5-8 weeks at the moment, so perhaps mid-February?

Any other tips from people who have had their cars delivered? I live in Halifax, so the closest Tesla presence is in Quebec City, I believe. Would there be any advantages to picking the car up in Quebec and driving home? I suppose of I'm one of the unlucky ones with cosmetic or other issues upon delivery, I might be better off taking delivery at a Tesla location.

Today's estimates will not be the same as estimates in 3 months. If you need to "schedule" a car, then that is best done by getting an inventory car. Otherwise, you need to wait until at least March to see what the delivery leads are looking like.

Right now you are seeing a year end, US tax credit ending, period where they were clearing the lots. The 5-8 week represents the time it will take them to start rebuilding an inventory.

Thanks for the insight. I will start keeping an eye on the inventory page, but it seems to be quite different here in Canada than it is down south. Whenever I've checked the inventory page, it's been completely blank. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the search is limited to cars within 200km, and I am about 1000km away from the nearest Tesla showroom or service centre...

You can see all the inventory cars in Canada at once. At the moment, there is only one new Model 3 available in Canada. A performance model in Calgary.

It was certainly difficult to get a car in Eastern Canada this last quarter. I was watching the inventory and jumped quickly when they released some demos. Not sure if the low supply would happen again next quarter (US tax incentives disappearing but then again worldwide demand increasing), I would place an order now, so your spot in line is reserved but I would also keep an eye on the inventory. If an inventory car comes up that you would accept, you can always change your order.

Find a good sales associate to work with. One that calls you back and is willing to work for you. Here in Ontario, I worked with an associate at the Lawrence location even though I took delivery in Oakville.

Cool, thanks! I didn't know about that site. My only issue with placing an order now, is if in 5-6 weeks they fulfill the order and I need to take delivery in February in the dead of winter. They don't allow you to defer the order once they match you with a car, right? I'm pretty dead-set on midnight silver with white interior too, which seems to be a fairly uncommon combination (a good thing, I think; everyone around here is white or black, it seems).

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend picking up in Quebec and driving back to Halifax. I’ve made that trip a couple times, and it’s a trip to do when you’re familiar with your car, it’s range and it’s quirks.

Do you want an April delivery, or did you just want it ‘after winter’? I’d put in an order a month before you want to get it, and just roll with it from there.

If the last quarter trend continues, you would get delivery of the Model 3 in either March or June.

As well, if your car arrives, you can take delivery or else your car goes to someone else and your order goes back into th queue.

I know this doesn't suit your needs exactly but unfortunately high demand and low supply are not working in your favour.

I tried to time my delivery for the end of my lease. I ordered 10 weeks before it was due to go back and it arrived 6 weeks later. This left me with a month of having 2 cars, 2 car payments, insurance, etc. Maybe a little wasteful but if you ever want a Tesla, you'll never time it pefectly. If it arrives early, enjoy your gas savings sooner and have a better driving experience.

Good advice. I figured I'd be okay now that the supercharger network is pretty solid from Quebec to Halifax, but you're probably right that a trip like that shouldn't be my first drive.

I'm not set on April but like I said earlier, I want to avoid the need for winter tires. I'd probably be okay with delivery in mid to late March, since the winters here aren't that harsh. I also work from home, so I don't need to go out if the weather is bad.

Thankfully, my lease ended in November, so I'm at no risk of double payments for anything! My only concern with the car being delivered early (besides the winter thing) is that means I'll be kicking my girlfriend's car out of the garage earlier than I had promised...

It's less the Superchargers than familiarity with your car. The road between here and there is NOT kind, so you want to know what to expect from your car before you start wondering "is that right? Am I hearing a sound I should worry about?" etc.

At the height of the rush to deliver orders to Ontario before Ford was elected, it was a 4-8week window. I think I ordered April 2018. See my signature for the exact delivery date. Without the rush, I would expect deliveries to Canada to remain consistent and timed to suit optimal delivery costs. Going with CdnElec's timeline as the long and mine as the short. I would expect anything from 8 to 16 weeks. I would order the car now or in early Feb at the latest.

Good luck... if you can stomach the wait for the best car on the market for the $*.

All N. American Tesla inventory is gone. They sold out to the bare walls to finish 2019 strong.
Sold all their inventory, loaners and demo models. Everyone wanted them prior to the EOY reduction in US tax credits.
They were even selling daily production out the back doors, with owners getting deliveries just a couple days after they rolled off the assembly line.
Now they are rebuilding their stocks and ramping up production.
Imagine that your best bet would be to place your order early March. You have just about as much chance of getting an early delivery (some recent production out of inventory) as a delayed delivery, going into Summer if you have a particularly unique configuration.

Typically early year production is sent to Europe/Asia. With the China plant ramping up, perhaps that will take off some of the pressure going into Summer.

Your most accurate guess would be to contact a sales specialist later next month. Explain your circumstances and see what they might suggest.

With World Wide demand going through the roof, timing delivery is certainly challenging.

Quick update here, we ordered last week of 2019, M3 White AWD. We just got a text message telling us to schedule a pick up date. We can also find the hidden VIN in the tesla account. So it looks like it is about 5 weeks for Toronto buyers.
