UI and Feeds Update

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
We have just updated the site with a new UI and features. Please note that we are still making some adjustments and configuring things. Please let us know if you see any issues or bugs.

[If you would like to continue to use the legacy "What's New" page, I have added the ability to add a "What's New" link to your primary navigation bar and mobile bottom navbar (only effects the non-pro 2022 styles, as the pro styles already have a "What's New" link there). You can turn this on by going to your Account Preferences.]

The main updates are the following:

1. New UI Style: We have new style/theme called "TMC 2022" and TMC 2022 Dark". These are very similar to our old styles, however they are a little more streamlined, should provide better performance on both desktop and mobile, and significantly improve readability (in particular for the dark style). There are some more consequential changes that you will notice, such as: the sub-navigation bar is no longer sticky on scroll-down; on mobile, the Conversations, Alerts and Account/Profile buttons are now merged into one in the top navigation bar; and on mobile the bottom navigation bar now has the navigation menu button as well as other useful links. If you are unhappy with any of the changes, please use the "TMC Pro 2022" and "TMC Dark Pro 2022" styles which are almost identical in function to the older style. You can change/specify your preferred style on your Account Preferences page.

Or you can change it by scrolling down to the bottom of your screen:

2. New Feeds Feature: Feeds is our new way of making TMC's Community content more accessible and easier to navigate and filter. Feeds will ultimately be taking the place of the "What's New" section, as it provides the same functionality and much more. What's New will remain accessible for those who still prefer it, however we will be removing What's New from the navigation bar at some point, so please bookmark it if you really want to use it and not Feeds.

You will notice on the Community homepage, a tab bar which allows you to switch between the various feeds that we offer. By default, existing logged in users will be taken to the "Forum list", which hasn't changed. However, you can switch to other Feeds easily, and even change your default feed from "Forum list" to a feed of your preference. This can be done in your Accounts Preference page in the section entitled "Default feed". You can also set a feed as default by going to your preferred feed, and selecting the "Set as default" button as seen here:

3. Voting: We have added the ability to vote on threads. This affects a given thread's vote score, which can be used as a sort option for your thread. Vote scores are also used to help determine which threads make it into the "Hot" feed.

Below are sections from the new TMC Website Tutorial that cover Voting and Feeds.

Feed tabs:
On the Community homepage there are various feeds that you can view:

  • Blog: A selection of curated article threads from our community.
  • Hot: A curated list of some of the best and most recent threads created by TMC members.
  • Discussion: A full list of all threads (similar in function to the older “New posts” page).
  • Questions: Displays all Question threads. Each of these feeds can be filtered by forum and more. For example, you can display only threads with unread content by clicking here.
  • Social: Shows the latest social status updates (AKA profile posts) from across the community.
  • Forum list: Not actually a feed, but rather is a shortcut to jump to the traditional list of forums, which can also be accessed by clicking on the “Forums” link in the sub-navigation bar under “Community”. On this page you can select.

You can choose between two different formats for thread feeds:

  • List: The classic, more condensed, view of the threads.
  • Card: A richer layout which previews the actual content of the thread’s first post, allowing you to take actions such as reacting to the post.

There is also a “Set as default” button. This option allows you to change what feed is shown by default when you come to the TMC Community homepage. This option can also be adjusted within your account settings in the “Preferences” section.

Feed Filtration:
The “Filter” section allows you to drill down to the specific content that you’d like to see. You have many options for filtering, including:

  • In forums: If you’d like to limit the feed to content only from specific forums that you select..
  • Unread content: If you’d only like to see content you haven’t previously seen/read.
  • Watched threads: If you’d only like to see threads you’ve created, interacted with, or manually watched.
  • Watched forums: If you’d only like to see threads from forums you’re watching.
  • Unanswered content: If you’d like to see content that doesn’t have any replies.
  • People you follow: If you’d only like to see content from your members that you have followed.
  • Order by: This option gives you a variety of sort orders such as:
    • Promotion date - when the threads were promoted to the feed by TMC Staff.
    • Last post date - when the latest reply to the threads were posted.
    • Thread creation date - when the threads were first created.
    • Vote score - the number of votes the threads received.
    • First post reaction score - the reaction score (incl. Likes, Informative, Helpful, etc.) of the first post of the threads.

Once you have specified your filtration options, you can select the “Save” button if you would like them to be saved and selected by default the next time you visit that specific feed.

Thread Voting: On any thread list page, such as a forum or a feed, you can up a thread. You can also up vote a thread on each thread's first post. The vote score is taken into account for curated feeds such as Blog and Hot. It also is a sort option that you can use in order to see threads with the highest vote score.

@danny Good Morning! Just wanted to let you know I reverted back to the original TMC UI as the mobile experience is so much better than on the new Pro UI (for me). One very annoying issue with the new UI is trying to scroll through alerts. Seems like the UI prefers rather to scroll through the threads beneath the Alerts window list. I gave it a try, as promised, but will pass on this current Pro rendition.

As saying comes to mind, “If it ain’t broke….”
What device and browser are you using, if I may ask?

It works perfectly for me. It only scrolls the threads beneath the Alerts window, if there is nothing left to scroll in the Alerts window.
Saw the same scrolling behavior on the "old" theme as well. TMC 2022.

I noticed that as well, and thought it was me. Only happened once.
Ok, please let me know if you experience this again as of my posting of this message. Thanks.
Not to keep piling it on, but again - saw this before the TMC 2022 theme. I thought it was network related, but guess not. Do not recall if it was links or images in the post that caused an issue. Will keep an eye out.

For me, hitting ctrl + z will bring the text back and then I just can hit reply. However, sometimes the forum will prevent me from posting until my allotted time between posts has passed. So it was as if a post was made, but disappeared.

Is it possible to consolidate Alerts the way they used to be years ago? Formerly a comment which had say 20 reactions would show a single alert until I checked the alert, then all reactions would be shown and the alerts would go away until another reaction was given. Now a comment with 20 reactions shows 20 alerts.
Maybe try being less reactionable.

So just to clarify, you noticed this happening before the update that introduced TMC 2022?

Is there an easy way to see just the threads that I am watching that have unread content? I know how to find watched threads. I think I used to have a filter set to only show those with unread content. Is there another way to find the unread ones amongst all the read ones there?

This thread looks like one that I watched, missed an alert on and got lost until someone referred it. But I think I just couldn't "watch" it when I first saw it because of the article watch bug that has now been fixed. But I just skimmed the older posts in this thread and didn't see a solution.

While I am bugging everyone, is the inability to delete our posts new for everyone? Or just new for supporting members. I would have sworn I could delete old posts before.

For example, I posted this on Friday. I would have deleted it and posted the answer rather than having to just quote my own post.

Thanks. I can make that will work. I notice those settings aren't permanent, which is nice since you can't apply them in sub threads under Community and it would be a bummer to accidentally make all other content disappear.
You can use the Save button under the filters to make them persist. I set filters for Unread content and Watched Threads and saved it. I then set the Discussion tab to be the default. Now whenever I click on Community (mobile or desktop) or Feeds (desktop), I see a list of all the unread threads that I follow. If I get caught up, I just click the "Show only: Watched threads" to temporarily remove that filter and I'm able to see other threads that I'm not currently watching. This process works for me, but I know others have their own method of reading forums.

Another oddity, the Community tab doesn't show my filters when using my laptop but Whats New does. Is there a reason the settings wouldn't work across all devices? Cookie issue? Just noticed this and haven't tried to reset the filters using the laptop yet, normally I use my desktop.

There have been some server outage issues during the last couple weeks, so I wonder if it had something to do with that.

This is how the software was designed to work, though we agree that it isn't ideal. We know of a potential solution to this, however we would need to test it properly as it is modifying behavior of the core software. If we haven't addressed thing in about a month or two, please follow up with us about it.

Yeah, I think this "scrolling behavior" is normal. If you can't scroll anymore in a given direction on the pop-out canvas, then it starts scrolling in the background. I believe this is how it was designed to work. If it doesn't scroll at all though, when there is still content to scroll in a given direction, then that would indeed be a bug, but based on what I'm gathering, that is not what is actually happening and we haven't been able to reproduce that on any of our devices.

Not for me; only on the updated UI
The issue which I have mentioned, which again is how it was designed to work (as far as I can tell), was present on the old style as well.

Another bit of odd behavior, one of my watched threads with unread new posts, Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion, does not show up when I use the community tab but it does show up using my bookmark https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/watched/threads
Can you please provide more details about this? Is this still happening? Are you sure that it wasn't just being filtered out by one of your filter settings?

It does show up if I use What's New but not Community.
Still happening? Can you please perhaps provide a screenshot, as you should be able to configure the Discussion Feed to be basically identical to the old WhatsNew/NewPosts feed.

I would have thought this was saved in your account rather than in the form of cookies, but I'm not sure. Have you tried again to configure it on your desktop? Please let me know what you notice.

Correct. There were a few times in August or September it did it. It is really sporadic. Not something easy to recreate.
Sounds like server issues, but really I have no idea. Please mention if it happens again.

We have found a way to give the TMC Pro 2022 and TMC Dark Pro 2022 styles the same bottom tab-bar on mobile that the old TMC style used to have, so Account, Conversations, and Alerts are now down there, instead of in the top nav-bar.

Please note, we have turned of the old TMC style as it was less optimal for mobile and had poorer performance. We feel that TMC Pro 2022 should cover almost all issues that users had with the new style.

I like it as it was before with the account, alert and conversation buttons. I used the What's New button probably 99% of the time. With the new layout, I'll probably use the Community button about 98% of the time. It is nice to have the list of some forums available there now.
"What's new-New Posts" and Alerts are my most used buttons on the old UI. On a mobile, they are fixed nicely at the bottom of the screen in easy thumb's reach. The new Pro UI is not as friendly in this regard.
I see the bottom buttons have returned on the mobile site. Thanks!

I suspect you three will be happy :)

@danny Thanks! Any way to add a what’s new, or new posts button to that fixed floating bottom quick menu?

We could but it would be unnecessary clutter and redundancy as the "Discussion" feed is virtually identical. If the Discussion feed is not working correctly for whatever reason, please let us know so we can make sure it gets fixed. Thanks.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, in the near future, you will be able to configure and save multiple filtration configurations, which you will be able to switch easily between, so it will be vastly more powerful than it already is compared to the New Posts feed.
