For those of us in the minority who don't use an Apple phone, I've been unable to get more than 500mA of charge current into my Android based Essential Phone from either the front or rear USB outlets. It uses USB PD.
I didn't really feel like wasting USD$7, but figured I give one of the USB data blockers that are also supposed to have some kind of charging circuit. I can report success as measured by my USB power meter. At an 85% charge state I was pulling 1.3A or almost 3X the current as before. I believe the front USB is supposed not put out 2.1A, but I'll take what I can get! This will let me run my phone with Waze and actually charge the battery as opposed to at slight net loss at only 500mA.
Here is the data blocker that worked for me.
