vanishing cameras?

I understood that the the 2 and 2.5 cars are now using the 8 cameras.
however looking at the description on the S new car configuration it seems one has to "order"..pay for.. the full self driving version for the 8 cameras to be used?
"
Full Self-Driving Capability
Build upon Enhanced Autopilot and order Full Self-Driving Capability on your Tesla. This doubles the number of active cameras from four to eight, enabling full self-driving in almost all circumstances, at what we believe will be a probability of safety at least twice as good as the average human driver. The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat.

Enhanced Autopilot now states that paying for Enhanced Autopilot goes from 1 camera to 4 cameras.

...Their wording seems very specific...

The old descriptions were very specific that Enhanced Autopilot got 4 and FSD got 8 cameras and there was no doubt about it.

However, I can no longer see such a specific different numbers of cameras between Enhanced Autopilot and FSD on their websites.

Just like batteries, Tesla used to boast kWh sizes but not any more.

It might just be the case with numbers of cameras as well.

Now, Tesla seems to focus on function rather than hardware.

So, for your concerns, I think Tesla can legally decrease the numbers of cameras from 8 to 4 for Enhanced Autopilot as long as the functions are minimally competent.

EAP is going to use all 8 cameras from here on out. It is the only safe way of doing it.

Originally, 2 windshield forward looking cameras and 2 rearward looking cameras were planned for Enhanced Autopilot.

As long as there's a human supervising Autopilot, that should be safe enough. Human serves as a redundancy system: If 4 cameras fail to recognize a dangerous automatic lane changing, human can step in and override the automation.

Without human input in FSD, additional 4 cameras are needed for redundancy (there's no human to be used as a redundancy system).

So, 4 is safe with human supervision, and of course, 8 is safer currently with a human in the driver seat.

So the question is how likely Tesla will reduce the number of cameras back to 4 for Enhanced Autopilot?

My guess: Maybe never!

But if it will, it might be a long time from now while it tries to perfect the 8 camera system first and scale back later.

Thinking as a software engineer, it would be stupid for Tesla to only use four cameras when you have EAP and 8 for FSD. I predict that the 8 cameras will always be used, but if you have the FSD option, you will be able to have the car do more things automatically compared to EAP.

The 8 cameras allow the car to 'know' what is happening around it. This is important no matter if doing just EAP or doing FSD. The differentiation will happen when Tesla finds something that can put into the FSD 'bucket'

And to the OP, there is no way to order FSD right now on the Tesla website. The only option is EAP.

I still have the option to buy FSD;

Autopilot Upgrade
Full Self-Driving Capability
All you will need to do is get in and tell your car where to go and your Tesla will figure out the optimal route.
Please note that Self-Driving functionality is dependent upon extensive software validation and regulatory approval which may vary widely by jurisdiction.

Looks like Tesla has solved the problem of 4 vs. 8 cameras as of 2/28/2019.

$3,000 Autopilot:
AutoSteer
TACC

Those 2 functions above do not need 8 cameras. Thus, the lower $3,000 price.

$5,000 FSD
Navigate on Autopilot (old EAP)
AutoPark (old EAP)
Summon (old EAP)
Traffic lights & stop signs automatic compliance
Automatic driving on city streets

These functions require 8 cameras. Thus, the higher price.

---------

That means existing EAP with 8 cameras have been grandfathered and won't lose any existing functions.

Only new folks who want 8 cameras will have to pay more (New folks who want Autopark now have to pay $8,000 while previous EAP folks only had to pay $5,000).

However, all levels, even with no Autopilot use all 8 cameras for collision detection and blind spot monitoring.
