so on the “Tesla forum” there is a fun thread about what cars have you owned before the model 3. Seems like a good break from all the negativity and complaining.

Anyway here you go most of my cars and my wife’s and some thoughts and there is much overlap.
1977 Jeep Grand Wagoneer - wait it got 3-4 mpg?
1985 Subaru GL 4wd wagon
1988 Subaru Legacy wagon
1986 Toyota Land Cruiser J60
A bunch of Subarus... outbacks, Legacy, wrx, Sti, a really cool gutted caged 2 door Impreza 2.5 RS I ice raced
1997 SL 500
More Subarus
1999 Audi allroad
2000 BMW M3 - worst car I even owned electrical gremlins had to threaten lemon law at dealer 14 times in 10 months. Dealer gave me full paid price trade in on -> 2001 911 turbo
2001 MB SLK 230
Still have the LC J60
2002 911 GT3 - track car, wholy crap I could crash this thing and be SOL
2003 Hummer H2 - yes really, my wife missed the huvee when she transitioned off the ground. It wasn’t the same
2003 Honda S2000 - track car, gutted, cage, supercharged
1996 Ferrari Testarossa - yep really only for ~6 months. I got a deal couldn’t pass up.
-Wait, we’ve waisted how much money trading out new cars out????!!!!!!!! We need to buy what we want and keep if for at least 10 years.
2003 MB e320 4matic
2004 cayenne turbo
Sold the J60, regret that one
2003 MB g500
2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee trailhawk - I got one of the first ones in 2012, my attempt to “buy American” - really the worst car we ever owned, air suspension faild: off road, in the cold, randomly. Center diff (viscous) overheats and fails on sand mode in the sand... lemon laws are not good in AK. Took the hit and got what I wanted anyway, another LC
-> 2013 Lexus LX 570
2014 Tesla model s base- but wait there is a better driving smaller version for way less $$$ with almost no disadvantages???that is AWD -> 2018 Tesla model 3 LR AWD
Also still have the 2003 MB e 4 matic (kids drive now) and have a 2010 Subaru Legacy we use as “the dog car”
Also had two 4wd converted ford “man vans” and a 1990 something F250 “plow truck”

I have a similar history to yours but I didn't go through as may cars. I tend to buy new and keep them until they fall apart. Also, my Jeep Grand Wagoneers got almost 10 mpg!
Mercury Comet, Chevrolet Vega, VWs, Audis, Land Cruiser, Subarus, Fiat 500(!)
I've never regretted selling any of my ICE cars. When they went, they were ready to go and I was happy to see them go. Even my 1982 Porsche 911 which was fun to drive but way too temperamental.
Currently have a 20 year old Land Rover Discovery with 190,000 miles (after lots of repairs) that I keep for taking stuff to the dump and to get around in deep snow. I expect it will die one day. Hopefully not before a good EV replacement.
I will never let my Model S go.

That's a lot of cars!

1999 Subaru Outback Sport. Put 55k miles on it, bought for $15k, sold for $7k. Sold 2004. No significant service costs.
2005 Subaru WRX STi. Bought 2004, sold 2018. Put 146k miles on it, bought for ~$35k, sold for $13k. (Spent about $25k in gasoline, avg 19mpg!) No major service costs, timing belt etc for $600 with OEM parts was the biggest cost I think. Strut replacements too I guess, $1400 or so for all 4?

Now the Tesla Model 3! It's better than the STi, though I suspect it can't take the beating the STi did. We'll see how the cost of ownership works out!

I guess I only thought it was Subie for life. Unfortunately if I waited for them to come out with something electric, it would have been sometime in the 2030s.

Most of the Subarus were “loaners”. And we got married in 1995 so from there on it was 2 of us. And we had almost 10 years of DINKs (Duel Income No Kids). But yes looking back we spent a ton of money switching our cars. The H2, SLK, and Cayenne turbo were leased.

I'll play:
  • 1977 Plymoth Volare woodie Wagon (I know, I know, but it was my dad's company car and they sold it to him at the end of the lease for $100) Hey, at least it had the 318 V8, which made a rowsing 135 hp. (!!!)
  • 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass with swiveling bucket seats and a "Rocket" 350 V8
  • 2 motorcycles
  • 1982 Dodge Lancer (turbo 5-speed!)
  • 1988 Acura Integra GS sedan (5 speed!)
  • 1990 Acura Legend Coupe LS
  • 1993 Acura Legend Sedan L
  • 2000 Audi A6 2.7T
  • 2004 Audi A6 2.7T
  • 2011 Audi S4 (lowered and tuned)
  • 2013 Audi S6 ("rocket-propelled executive lounge")
  • 2018 Tesla Model 3 Performance
So, that's 10 cars in 42 years of driving - not bad, I guess. With the exception of the '88 Integra, all were purchased used/CPO. The Model 3 is my first "new" car in 30 years...

Enjoyed them all. Yes, even the Volare, which would go exactly 107 mph flat-out, and which worked well as a date-night drive. Think about it...

The Tesla is far more fun to drive than any of its predecessors, though!

1993 Acura Integra - black, gold edition. I would kill for the sparkle in that paint again! I believe it was called a 3 door at the time, but would now be a hatch? Loved that car, totaled it one winter :(

1993 Toyota Camry - bought from a neighbor upon totaling my baby.

2007 Honda Civic

2012 Kia Optima Hybrid

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport - current car, my husband is the primary Model 3 driver. Will be trading it in for either a second Model 3 or a Y depending on the timeline!

That’s around 17 years of driving/car ownership.
