When does a Delivery Specialist get assigned

I ordered our MY on June 29th, have completed all steps to include financing and now my order is sitting at the Provide Proof Of Insurance task. Of course, I can't do that until I get a VIN. But I keep reading about folks being assigned a DS and having conversations with them about their order.

So when does the DS get assigned to an order? These processes aren't very well documented for newb's like me.

Thanks in advance

Yep, every experience is different from what I can tell. YMMV.

When I ordered mine on 4/29, it was within 24 hours I got the email welcoming me to the family 48-72 hours before a delivery specialist in Las Vegas contacted me and asked if I had any questions and told me what to expect. From that day forward, he NEVER initiated a call to me, and still has yet to talk to me unless I call him. On occasion I get him, but most times I get his voicemail.

I went and test drove a MY at my local SC, and "hit it off" with a local guy and I asked if I could use him instead. He said sure and gave me his contact info. At first he was VERY responsive, but now has disappeared off the face of the earth. Since my MY has transportation logistical issues, when I call my local center every few days, I usually get someone completely different to answer my questions of when it will make it the rest of the way out.

From when I ordered to when I had my first delivery appointment, I would say I had less than 5 human contact scenarios. Since my logistics issue, I would say I have had 10ish human contacts trying to get things worked out.

Also ordered on 6/27 (Saturday) and I got a email within two hours from my SC congratulating me on my order.

I asked a few follow up questions, but it has been silent for 2 weeks lol. I am assuming when I get assigned a VIN, the communication will start again.

Since I'm stuck on the Proof Of Insurance task, it reads:
Proof of insurance is required to take delivery.

Your Tesla VIN must be listed on your policy in all but these states.

I looked at the note, it reads:
Proof of insurance is required to take delivery, and must be valid for the next 60-90 days. If you're registering in these 12 states, insurance can be provided for an existing car.
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Washington
In all other states, insurance must be provided for the Model Y.

What does this mean, I will be registering the car in Illinois. Am I supposed to upload a copy of the insurance card for our 2017 Volt?

As I understood it, all the "system" cares about it something uploaded in that section of the website. It doesnt even need to be an insurance card. I could be a pic of your dog. However, what does matter is that before delivery or final payment that you do have a valid insurance card loaded in the system.

So what I did was load a copy of my 2018 Subaru Forester's insurance card. That sufficed. As soon as I got a VIN assigned, I called my insurance company (USAA) and they created a new policy with a future effective date (day of delivery) tied to that VIN. I took a copy of that card and replaced the Subaru's card with the Tesla card.

Yeah, I don't get that requirement. Usually it takes a week or so to get a new insurance card with the new VIN on it. Most insurance companies will automatically cover your new car for a week or so until you can get all the paper work straightened out.

Seems like it's different for everyone. I ordered in October, finally noticed a VIN in my account last Sunday, and still have never received any contact from a human.
I got tired of waiting for Tesla to reach out to me, so I called the delivery line (888) 771-2505, which was just an automated system that ended up transferring me to my local delivery center. The guy I spoke to there was able to tell me that my car is in transit between California and Chicago, and should be delivered sometime the week of the 20th. I should expect to get a message to schedule delivery about a week before that.

Ok that’s what I just did, guess I’ll see if anything changes. I wish there was a How to Order Your Tesla guide.

Didn't you get a VIN like a month ago? Don't tell us you're already paying for the insurance on a car you don't know when you'll see.

My heart goes out to you. I'm surprised you don't fly to SLC to pick the damn thing up.

Yep. USAA was good about pausing the insurance clock. I have a policy against the VIN but not paying anything as I have not taken delivery yet. They said just call them when I take delivery and they will activate the policy and get things charged. I will likely call them once I have a FIRM delivery date (local agent visibly seeing the car in his lot, with VIN verified)

As for the trip to SLC. It came close, and still may be in my future.
Last night I got an email from my local delivery agent saying "I just got word back from my logistics team for your car. Looks like they are sourcing a truck to get that car moved here to CO right now. Should have another update for you soon once it gets on a truck."

Crickets today, but I have family in town so if it isnt delivered by the time they leave, the day after they leave I am on a plane to SLC. :)

I sat on waiting for insurance portion all the way until I went to pick up my car, at which point I gave them my existing insurance card. Most insurance cover new purchases for 10 days. So it wasn’t until like 4 days after I brought the car home and sold my old car within that time that I called my insurance (Mercury) to remove old car and add the Tesla.

The reason they do this new purchase policy is because a lot of car sales happen on holidays, what if you spontaneously got a car deal on Wednesday before. Thanksgiving, at 10pm? Well insurance won’t even be open until 5 days from then.

the reason I sat in that step is because I wanted to see Tesla’s quote, but you can’t until you get a vin, I got vin same time as delivery was scheduled.

as a side note, Mercury quoted be about 15% lower than Tesla insurance.

See my reply above. You don’t need to do that step, just bring the card when you go to pick up the car. Also no need to start insurance or even call them prematurely. Most insurance companies cover new purchases for 10 days, some even a month.

doesnt hurt to do what you did, but not necessary. It’s just you will have to do extra leg work to change the stuff over if something happens to your delivery date.

I picked up my Y about 3 weeks ago from Fremont. I had someone pinging me via text to complete all steps, but never had a DS assigned. It would have been nice to talk to someone, but it worked out in the end. It was an uncomfortable process (and the CV pandemic isn't helping).

It varies from state to state, but I provided my current insurance card, and at least for VA, that was good enough to take delivery.
