Why isn’t the external body skirting colour coded?

I agree! I don't care for all the black plastic. Looks cheap and over time becomes faded and requires separate maintenance.

Seems like it's similar styling to Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5, etc. and not uncommon for off-road vehicles. I'm otherwise indifferent to it as compared to a painted skirting.

Because it breaks of the mass of the car. It'd look even more bulbous if it was body color all the way down.

+1 exactly. The Model X already has a very slab sided appearance. Plus I find it quite practical for cleaning and avoiding minor scuffs and scrapes.

Seeing after-market colour coding on the X confirms my view, but it's all subjective.

The black trim is actually one of the reasons I chose a white Model X. It creates a nice contrast (along with the black roofline) and breaks up the massive amount of sheet metal! With everything in black it looks like one huge blob, but would look even worse on a white car IF it was all colour-coded white like you often used to see with 1980s hot hatches!

Interestingly Jaguar have gone for a different solution with black stripes down the sides to break up the slab and create an illusion of a coke-bottle waist. That's perhaps a more elegant solution, but a little contrived, and I do like having sacrificial plastic around the wheel arch edges to avoid chips and scuffs.
