With all the Petro Can and CTC EV growth do I invest in a CHAdeMO?

Who is considering or has bought one?

I just saw this with the pricing and have been following some other threads as I going to start some longer trips from Toronto to Ottawa, etc.

Petro-Canada EV Charging Costs: From $0.20/minute, Apple Pay Accepted

Looks like they have variable per min rates depending on how quickly your car takes a charge (which makes sense if they are not charging by a more logical Kw).

And why the investment in CCS at 350kW when that seemed to be the EU standard? I dont see any adapters for our cars to use this standard.

And also.. Seeing varying responses in threads on how man kW a Tesla CHAdeMO adapter can supply to my car.

well.. with my 2015-85 battery & 'chargegate'.. I know I wouldn't be able to do 100-350kW anyways (with a CHAdeMO or CCS). Very tiny violin playing sad music for me right now...

I dont think there are any other options that I know of so we may be forced down this path if the Canadian rollout makes it a more convenient option than Supercharging.

Supercharging is much cheaper than this given the 50 kw limitation on chademo, and you'll not always get even that. For example I typically get around 35-40kw for most of the charge due to the battery being cold and the heating method the model 3 uses kicking on and taking 7 kw or so for it. Factor in the price per minute is more expensive due to the lower charge rate, and you need to invest in a 600 chademo adaptor and there is not a good case to buy the adaptor unless you don't have access to a supercharger close by.

I charge almost exclusively at home and rarely use superchargers. I was more concerned with taking longer trips in the summer to cottage country, Ottawa, Montreal, etc (from Toronto). If Kingston superchargers have lineups I want viable alternatives. I am already rehearsing how to ‘inform’ my cottage owning friends that I will be wiring up a 14-50 socket at their places this summer.. haha.

In the end, we are all going to handle this differently. I am one of those guys with the highest end USB-C PD portable battery pack (or 2) in my work backpack with every adapter ready to go (because I am a nerd).

I think the calculation is very situation specific.

First, consider that the cost of a CHAdeMO adaptor is 1.07% or less of the price of a TM3.

Then consider what value you put on your time.

Today I was 150+ km from a Supercharger. I could have spent a few hours at a level 2 charger. But I had my CHAdeMO adaptor with me. I spent about a half hour charging and was on my way.

I am in that location a couple of times each month. My time is worth that money.

Option is always better than no options. For MexiCanuck, it makes complete sense to get one, not because his time is worth more than us lol. It is the convenience and security we are after. Really, if I am stuck in the middle of nowhere, and I can pay to get a quick charge, I will jump on it, $600 ish one time charge means nothing.

For us, Tesla owner, we know we have superchargers that we can use, let alone it is cheaper. The other EV are just doing catch up.

Also most CCS/chademo have 1 or 2 stations so if it becomes common for Tesla's to use them they will be overfull on Montreal/Toronto/Ottawa corridor.
I used them on 2 trips in my SR+. Montreal - Toronto and Montreal - Rimouski during the fall 2019. Both Roundtrips over weekends. I never had to wait and they were always free/no costs. I expect that since they are billing now peeps are less likely to freeload like I was doing purposely. Paid back of portion of the CHAdeMO adapter costs. Took more time to charge of course but since it was free and I had Tesla Theater to pass the time nicely.

Thanks for all the input. Ordered online today from Tesla. Called the North York store to see if they might stock them. The guy who answered (front desk) didn't know what I was talking about and transferred me to a department that is closed for the weekend (not surprised).

So you can all be happy that a new one with higher kW and CCS models will be released right after I get mine ;)

Its worse than mini-USB, Lightning, USB-C, or electrical sockets 120/240 all over the world. Its sad that we probably have <1% of EV vs ICE in the world and we still cant make the painful move now to use 1 standard internationally before we continue to diverge. At least the Porn industry spoke up and said its VHS and Beta literally died (sad because beta weeks better) but having 1 standard was great (until it was obsolete).

It depends on your usage patterns. I have had my Model S for over five years and there has only been one instance where a Chademo would have come in handy. But that issue would have been solved with a SC at Brockville, which is (hopefully) coming soon.

Once the currently announced SC network is complete most of Ontario's cottage country is pretty close to a SC, the one exception being Haliburton/Kawartha area. But there are SCs scheduled to open soon in Perth, Peterborough, Bancroft and Bracebridge - but who know how long it will be until these are open. And there is destination charging currently in several spots in cottage country as well so that may be a good option - go to a place like Boshkung Brewery for lunch and charge at 16kW for a couiple of hours.

Correction:
No SC anywhere near cottage country in Southern Lake Huron- Grand Bend! Closest would be 59 minutes away in London.
“Ontario’s West Coast” is poorly covered.

True but given that most folks going to Grand Bend are coming from London it isn't that much of an issue as you can go London-Grand Bend -London and still have lots of juice left. According to Google Maps it is 59 minutes but only 67 km from London-Grand Bend. Most (all?) Teslas can do that return trip twice without needing to charge. And that is also assuming that the almost complete "London" SC is actually the one listed as Strathroy on the map. If Strathroy still gets built it is only 50 km from Grand Bend.

There is also a SC coming soon for Kincardine/Tiverton for folks with cottages farther north on Lake Huron.
