Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Wait, since when did Tesla start telling people that they would need to pay for the UV treatment?

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

The UV tools have only been in use for a month or two. It’s not a good sign if they are frequently breaking already. Has there been any part of this situation that Tesla hasn’t bungled lately?

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I have been wondering about this a bit lately. Do appointments with mobile techs count the same as time in the shop? Given Tesla seems pretty keen on keeping cars out of the service centers I was wondering if the mobile techs aren’t completely a convenience to the customer but also a way to do...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

“As a permanent fix...” are they implying that the UV treatment is not permanent? Tesla doesn’t seem to be able to get its story straight on that point. Even so, Tesla should be giving you, under warranty, a fix that they 100% believe is permanent. The fact that they are not willing to stand by...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I think it is just that Tesla started to deny screen replacements for this over six months ago saying that a fix is on its way. People were patient and waited for Tesla to come out with a solution. However, after months of being given the run around and generally treated like idiots by the...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I’m glad to hear your SC is trying but it is a bit disappointing to hear that they are waiting to the 30th day to take care of it. It really makes it feel like they just don’t care if even after arbitration they drag their feet on getting it fixed. I don’t think this is your service centers...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I suspect that they will ultimately tell you that "the fix is coming and they will let you know when it does" or some such nonsense. I don't get the sense the service centers have the power to many any decisions on their own regarding the yellow screens.

    Software update bricked my car

I'm sure Tesla feels this is simply a wear and tear issue. Why should an owner assume a core part of their car will last the life of the vehicle... totally unreasonable to think that.

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I would be curious to see what your screen looks like after the treatment in screen cleaning mode and/or the sketchpad.
  11. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

As amusing as contacting the service center every day would be Tesla has made attempting to contact an SC near impossible. They don't want to hear about your problems. Its not like their job is to provide support to the owners or anything (part of which is just answering simple "how do I..."...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Are the S and X screens liquid cooled?
  13. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I'm a bit afraid that issue this is a canary in a coal mine. It is our warning that Tesla doesn't believe it has any obligation to their customer's to honor their warranty. If there is something Tesla no longer feels like fixing they will just make up a reason to weasel out of it. Tesla is...

    MCU Yellow Border - Fixed!

Having Tesla replace the screen under warranty two times for this issue should be pretty strong evidence if you decide to go to arbitration. Tesla will try to argue that they didn't know the yellowing was caused by "sunlight" back then which is why they were so kind and just replaced it but now...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Since this is probably helpful to many I will do my best to summarize the current state of the Tesla yellow screen issue as it stands today. A yellow border forms around the center touchscreen on Model S and Model X cars. This has been going on since 2016. The cause is likely heat / oxidation...
  16. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Sadly this might be accurate. Internally the yellow screen might not be a big issue as many are focused on the future (3 and Y) and as long as this isn’t getting media attention they might not feel (or know) it is impacting the brand image. It’s also possible the poor service is just working...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

What incentive do they have? It would seem that they want to stay on Tesla’s good side if they want freebies and invites to events. They can’t really afford to make Tesla an enemy.

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I know there are mixed feelings about class actions on here but this is something one would help with. It could be ruled that Tesla needs to fix/replace all defective screens regardless of warranty status. My warranty runs out in less than a year. I am very interested in exploring my options to...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

The lawyer for Tesla seems to firmly believe it isn't a warranty issue. In all seriousness, this is obviously a warranty issue. Tesla is making themselves look ridiculous by trying to argue that it is not. Sure, you might save a few bucks today but customers will remember how you treated them...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

This is an interesting photo. It looks like the discoloration follows the outline of the bezel as it curves up the side. My first thought was that this is evidence that maybe this issue really is caused by sunlight. However, it can't be that simple. I always assumed the yellow banding was around...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I'm curious why he seems so eager to avoid arbitration. Maybe his performance is evaluated on his win/loss rate or on the cost? It almost seems as if he cares more about it not going through arbitration than he does about denying the repair.

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I bet it’s a BMW given what an ass this guy appears to be (apologies to any BMW owners on here. I’m sure your lovely people).
  23. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

This is pretty important. I hope you got their reason in writing. This really undermines Tesla's claim that the yellow screen has no material impact on the value of the vehicle.
  24. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Tesla is pushing back hard that this work should be marked down as "goodwill". Maybe that is simply for internal accounting reasons but I suspect that what you said is the real reason. They want to build a paper trail that shows that the Tesla yellow screen issue is not a warranty issue. If you...
  25. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

It might not matter to customers but I am starting to wonder if it matters to Investors. Tesla marks an awful lot of service as “goodwill”. By doing so are they defrauding investors? They report their warranty expenses in their quarterly reports. If they aren’t including the cost of the goodwill...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Let me guess, you were told that you are being unreasonable and that you don't need to go around tweeting because of course Tesla wants to help you. Why, if only you would have brought your car in for an appointment they would gladly have provided a UV fix as a goodwill gesture even though they...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Tesla's communication on this is such that I'm not sure I trust what anyone at Tesla is saying. Either because they have "an honesty problem" or because they just don't know what is going on. Tesla supposedly has an internal wiki page(s) on the UV treatment for the service centers. Maybe this...
  28. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

It remains to be seen what happens when the UV treatment doesn't work and the owner didn't go through arbitration. Will Tesla still replace the screens in that case or will they tell the owner too bad? It will probably be some time before we know the answer to this as arbitration seems to be the...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

That has to be the most asinine argument I have ever heard. Tesla is just making themselves look foolish. The fact that they have to resort to these sort of slimy tactics to dupe some arbitrators into siding with them just goes to show how thin their case really is. They can't win one of these...
  30. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Sorry your case didn't go well. I guess Tesla isn't above resorting to flat out lies to win one of these cases. It really is disgraceful how they are behaving over this. Honestly, their dismissive and combative attitude over this is more upsetting to me than the actual issue itself.
  31. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

It takes a while for the arbitration hearing to be scheduled anyway. I would not cancel the hearing until the repair has been completed and marked as warranty.
  32. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

If the issue is caused by sunlight is Tesla being negligent when my car is in for service and they park it out in the sun before/after service? Clearly, I should be doing all I can to keep this fragile item away from sunlight (only drive at night, park in the garage, etc)... shouldn't they?

    Tesla Warranty Versions

Finally got around to comparing the April 2017 warranty with the Feb 2019 version. For the most part they are basically the same. It was interesting that Tesla made a lot of changes to the wording of the battery warranty and added some wording about software. Apparently (if I am reading the new...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Lucky for you Tesla's official stance on this issue is that it has zero or minimal impact on the value of the vehicle!
  35. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I have the feeling that reports of the latest screen revision fixing the yellow screen issue are overly optimistic. Tesla themselves doesn't seem to be willing to stand behind the screens. I guess time will tell. I suspect (though this is pure conjecture on my part) that Tesla has all but given...
  36. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Unfortunately the only way you will get Tesla to handle this situation anytime soon is to go through arbitration. If you want the yellow screen fixed before resale and don't want to wait a few more months I'm not sure there is any other way. Start to finish the arbitration process is about 2...

    Tesla Warranty Versions

That is actually my reason for wanting to collect older versions of the warranty. Tesla doesn't seem to want people to have easy access to them. I would like to gather up as many versions as I can and make them available online for owners to be able to easily reference.
  39. M

    Tesla Warranty Versions

Does anyone have PDFs of older revisions to the Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty? I can download the Feb 1 2019 revision from the Tesla website but can't find any older copies. I don't really like that Tesla only makes the latest copy available on their website (as far as I can find).

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

There was a previous thread where a user was reporting that the yellowing impaired their ability to use some of the controls along the bottom of the screen. That is probably an extreme example but it is not purely cosmetic. See: Yellow bands of death can disable some touchscreen controls

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

If someone were to make an app that tweets a fart noise to Elon every time a warranty claim is denied I'm sure that would get some media attention.
  42. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I have not paid for Tesla to replace a part, let alone asked for the old part back so this is pure speculation on my part. I would imagine that what is really going on is far more benign. The service centers likely either do not know about the law requiring them to give the old part back if...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Unfortunately I think the claims are per car so you would have to file twice. You could do it serially so you can learn from the first go around for the second car.

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Sorry your case didn't go the way you wanted. I'm quite frankly surprised by the decision you were handed. How is someone supposed to prove that sunlight did not cause the issue? The burden of proof that sunlight is the cause should be on Tesla. If you go back to testhrowaway's documents in the...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Congratulations! Definitely keep us updated over the next 30 days on what Tesla does. I'm curious to hear more reports of if the UV treatment worked.

    Yellow Border

Tesla's handling of this issue is not acceptable by any means. The yellow screen is a defect that impacts a large number of Model S and X cars. Tesla, unfortunately, has been trying to weasel out of their obligations to their customers on this. Several people have gone through arbitration to...
  47. M

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

Not to minimize your experience but that is pretty average for Tesla's response to this issue I'm afraid. I see the "why bother" argument come up quite a bit around the yellow screen issue. My thoughts on this is that the crux Tesla's strategy with this issue is banking on their owner's...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

The first post in this thread does a pretty good job of walking you though the process and even gives Tesla's response and their talking points (in that arbitration case at least). There are a number of people on this forum who have now gone through arbitration over this issue and can provide...

Yellow screen? Force Tesla to Replace it!

I think this is really the true cost of Tesla's short-sightedness on customer experience lately. They have turned their biggest supporters into adversaries. I got my Model S a few years ago before anyone else in my immediate circle (friends, family, and co-workers). I would often talk about...
