Are cheaper aftermarket battery packs on the horizon?

I know there are a couple companies that will refurbish a pack for less than Tesla. I am wondering if there are any true aftermarket packs under development? Having an older Model S gives me anxiety...

    2014 Model S issues

Mine has been replaced twice, both were under warranty. 2014 P85+. Hopefully the latest one lasts longer.

What else can break on my 2014 Model S?

I'm not even sure what an option code is, lol. But if it's easy I can give it a shot. The part number was DU(1025598-00-T) both times. Edit - figured out how to do it. My motor code is X024 Performance Motor I don't have any DUxx code.

What else can break on my 2014 Model S?

I just checked my service history, the drive units were replaced in April 2021 at 68k miles and September 2021 at 72k miles. I must have gotten a bad rebuild the first time.

What else can break on my 2014 Model S?

Knock on wood, but I'm driving a 2014 P85+ and the only out-of-pocket costs I've had so far have been a 12v battery. The drive unit was replaced twice under warranty though...

I have a 2014 pre-AP P85+, out of warranty for battery and DU. I'm just taking the risk. The drive unit was replaced near the end of the warranty period and the battery is still fine (for now). If the battery dies I'll have a big choice to make...

Plaid 21” rear tire woes - factory defect?

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but on my 2014 P85+ (with air suspension and large rear drive unit, 21" wheels), I had some Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires fail in the same manner (*not* Tesla OEM, but the Super Sports). The tread was worn down better across the tire than many of the...

That's a great pic of the problem. Clearly there is a ton of tread left.

Plaid 21” rear tire woes - factory defect?

My rear and front tires have both failed in this manner and they were both Michelins Pilot Sports (the older model, PS2). The rears still had good looking tread on them when it happened. I keep my suspension at the normal height all the time. I'll be replacing with a different brand and I guess...
  15. S

Plaid 21” rear tire woes - factory defect?

This is for a 2014 P85+ (staggered tires), not a Plaid, and it's the front tires. How do we know if the Pilot Sports are Tesla OEM versions or generic Pilot Sports?
  16. S

Plaid 21” rear tire woes - factory defect?

I'm having my 21" front tires (Pilot Sports) replaced tomorrow or the next day due to delamination on the inside edges. But, to be fair, they were pretty worn down. My rear tires failed similarly a year or two ago.

Loud popping sound thru speakers when S wakes up after MCU2 upgrade

That's a disappointing answer. I feel like a lot more people would be complaining about it if all S's and X's that got the upgrade were making the sound.

Loud popping sound thru speakers when S wakes up after MCU2 upgrade

I have the same issue since the MCU2 upgrade. It happens when someone opens a door or when I do something through the app like activate Homelink. I mentioned it to the service team and they said they'd need to see the car in-person to investigate. I haven't done that yet because of the...

MCU2 upgrade install delayed for months, Parts backordered or what?

I finally got mine, but streaming music didn't work, my phone app wouldn't unlock the car or open the trunk, the subwoofer pops whenever I enter the car, and the tech left something on my dash that slid off and to the side of the passenger seat. I fished around with my hand for it and found it...

Model S leaking glue under touchscreen

I was able to roll up a paper towel the exact width of the screen, and there is a slot behind the lower edge that the dripping goo comes out of. I shoved the paper towel in that slot. This prevents the goo from dripping on things below, but it does not solve the problem of bubbles in the screen...

MCU2 upgrade install delayed for months, Parts backordered or what?

Mine is delayed, again, until September. But I think that's just a placeholder appointment, not an indicator that the parts will actually arrive by then. They originally sent me an invoice with the $1750 price, but I texted back and they agreed to honor the $1500 price since that's what it was...

To MCU2 or not to MCU2?

The MCU2 will be worth it for me because both my screens are really bubbly and need to be replaced anyway. I'm not too concerned about any new features. Maybe Netflix will be nice to use a few times a year, but that alone isn't worth $1500.

Main Battery Pack Replacement - How Many Miles?

Also, keep in mind there will be more owners with < 50,000 miles than the next category, and each category has fewer and fewer total owners than the one before. So it might make the numbers skew towards lesser miles than the actual odds.

Who is also stuck on 2020.48.37.6 ?

I just got a new 2020.48.37.8. The only changes are being able to view your cellular connection info and a new feature allowing you to remain connected to wifi while driving. This means you can turn on your phone's hotspot and stay connected to that while driving. I'm guessing this is Tesla's...

    A yoke or a joke?

I'm not joking. My preference would be: 1. Round steering wheel 2. Yoke with a knob/disc 3. Yoke
  35. S

    A yoke or a joke?

True, but it would make the overall system (yoke + knob) a functional improvement over a round wheel. Easier to make sharp turns and better visibility of the dash. I'm sure someone could design one that didn't look like a tractor knob. Maybe like Darmie suggested just palming the bottom left...
  36. S

    A yoke or a joke?

I'm sure some vendor will come up with a power knob that makes sharp turns easier. The knob spins so you can just grab it and spin around as much as you want. Very popular on boats and machinery.

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

After living with the new DU for a while I am certain my efficiency is way better. My trip predictions are pretty much spot on even if I go 80+ on the interstate. Before the DU replacement, the trip predictions were *very* optimistic and I had to plan on stopping to charge before the trip...

Just had my rear drive unit replaced after getting the error messages about reduced acceleration, regen, and car may not start. It is a 2014 P85+ with ~ 67000 miles. Got part number 1025598-00-T.

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

I thought the same thing at first too, but envisioned it as tilting the top of the wheel forward would select drive, tilting the yoke back towards you would engage reverse. But then I discounted this idea when I thought about how easy it would be to accidentally engage (unless you had a...

To MCU2 or not to MCU2?

I think MCU2 is a no brainer for me. I have a bubbly/leaky screen, 8 GB eMMC that's starting to fail, and a 3G modem.

How are the used 20-25k model S cars?

Any older car will likely need an MCU replacement sometime soon if it hasn't already been done. I bought a 2014 and have had to fix one door handle and will, at some point, lay down the $2k for an MCU2 + radio.
  45. S

    A yoke or a joke?

Variable steering might work, but what happens if you turn the wheel a bit at 20 mph and then accelerate to 60 mph while trying to turn at a constant radius? Is the wheel going to forcefully un-turn as you accelerate or will you start turning sharper and have to unwind it yourself? I'm guessing...

NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 [now 135,000] vehicles for eMMC failure. Voluntary Recall issued

Is the 3G to LTE upgrade included with MCU2 or is it a separate component?
  49. S

NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 [now 135,000] vehicles for eMMC failure. Voluntary Recall issued

I think it does make sense for Tesla to offer the MCU2 upgrade discounted by $500 or whatever the cost to replace a daughterboard is. It will simultaneously reduce the number of MCU1s they need to refurbish and give them more used MCU1s on hand to refurbish.
