Death of a center screen / touch screen after warranty

The comments about purchasing the ESA, or not keeping a MS once it's out of warranty is very troublesome to me, and doesn't really address the cost of long term ownership. My MS was delivered the end of Sept, 2014, and I did purchase the ESA, I'm now coming up on 27 months of ownership, and I...

Improving Supercharger Availability $0.40 idle fee

I don't think you understood my point. Since Tesla messages me about 3 charging statuses; 1) when charging has started 2) when it's almost complete, and 3) when it's complete, how about the app being updated so that an owner can specify a particular audible alert to signify when any of these...

Improving Supercharger Availability $0.40 idle fee

As an owner who has 89,000 miles in 26 months, I think this is a knee-jerk reaction to a situation that needs to be addressed. 1) I have not been able to set my iPhone messaging to give me an audible alert when charging is complete. Having an audible alert that needs acknowledgement would...

An Update to our Supercharging Program

I woke up this morning to the breaking Tesla news. I've had my MS for 25 months now,and have 81,000 miles on it. It's seen Canada and the US, and I admit I love driving it. I understand that my current MS is not impacted, but my thoughts about buying a new one is a couple of years might be...

Feasible to get California to spend $ maintaining lane markings better?

I couldn't agree with you more! The lane markings are horrendous. In Northern California, I-5 markings just disappear, and seem to be the lowest priority for CalTrans. Lane markings on I-5 from Tracy to Yolo County are terrible.

Tesla's 85 kWh rating needs an asterisk (up to 81 kWh, with up to ~77 kWh usable)

Some very strongly held positions on this thread. While I say to each his own, I appreciate reading the greatly varied views. I would like to get the usable energy out of the MS I paid for. That said, I'm looking for other examples to refute/support my position (whatever it may be) My...

In-development: Inexpensive Custom BMS for Tesla Battery Modules

I see this leading to PowerWall 2.0! Being able to repurpose Tesla Battery Modules will greatly increase their usefulness. What voltage do you intend to bring each cell to? 4.10 Volts? adjustable? Thanks for pursuing this.

    Repairing a Flooded Tesla Model S : HOW-TO

btr ftw, It's a shame that you couldn't disassemble your vehicle, with pictures and steps to show how to get at, remove and replace parts, assemblies, etc. I'd think working out a deal with Haynes or Chiltons would be an interesting endeavour. Haynes DIY manuals get updated as new models are...

    Repairing a Flooded Tesla Model S : HOW-TO

How about the old kids snorkel, you know, the one with the ping pong type ball that free floats, but closes when your head dipped a bit too low in the water. But on second thought, probably not in Tesla's marketing strategic vision.

Tesla's 85 kWh rating needs an asterisk (up to 81 kWh, with up to ~77 kWh usable)

wk057, Thanks for the info. Here's my 2 cents worth. The comparison about engine size of ICE vehicle model vs engine size is tenuous. on a Mercedes 300 being a 2.8 litre or 3.0 litre is immaterial, since the engine displacement was inferred in the model number. You could say it's assumed on...

    Repairing a Flooded Tesla Model S : HOW-TO

I specialize in 2002 Ford Thinks, which is a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV). A couple of months ago, I added another Ford Think to my herd (or maybe this being the 1st in my flotilla is a better description). It was on a boat ramp, and by accident, was driven into the ocean. It remained...

Let the hacking begin... (Model S parts on the bench)

How about "V1, V2, Rotate" For those not in the know, these are aircraft takeoff terms. V1 is the speed beyond which the takeoff can no longer be safely aborted V2 is the speed at which the aircraft may safely become airborne with one engine inoperative Rotate is said as a...

    Blown two tires

I don't know the current pricing on the 21" tires and rims, but paid the Tesla SC yesterday for the following,... a new 19" Michelin Tire ($300), New Stock Rim ($300), TPMS ($50), Mounting & Balancing ($50), plus tax. The 19" Goodyear tire ($180) was also available from Tesla, but I prefer...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

If I'm being too blunt, I apologize, but I'd love to hear about the technical information that supports your singular answer. I hope that it wasn't, but then again, hardware failures occur, and it would possibly be comforting to know (but obviously not from a litigation perspective).

Saw Not 1, But 2 P90D MX at Fremont SpC

My MS is in the Fremont SC, so I went over to the Delivery area to plug my loaner in, and saw 2 P90D's at the supercharger stalls. Nice to finally see them. Took some pictures of 1 of them. I didn't realize how much taller they are, and how much stubbier the front is, vs the MS.

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

I thought about the Tesla rep stating the Tesla engineers perused and analyzed the 'logs', and this started me thinking about EDR's. Quick points include 96% of new cars have them, and while they are not mandated to be installed in cars, if they are, they must record certain data. The data is...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

Thanks to the OP, for the initial post, and the followups on this thread. While it's not always comfortable dealing with reality, and being objective in describing negative events, it's always for the greater good. Basing replies on subjective or biased information doesn't really promote...

Dual charger useful when away from home?

I started a thread last year about "Why I ordered my MS with the 2nd charger". Quite a bit on that, and...

Any Tips Driving Model S Detroit to San Diego?

I traveled from Lodi, CA to Port Huron, MI and then into Ontario about 3 months ago. Columbia, MO and Albuquerque, NM were not up until I had already bypassed them. No problems on the trip. I found the on-board NAV was barely ok when traveling across country. HOWEVER, in routing short...

    Tesla Powered Truck Thoughts

I don't disagree with you. However, even with the roadster upgrade, MS production and improvements, model X release, and the Model 3 in progress, I remain optimistic that Tesla's engineers are burning the midnight oil on a truck. However, I wouldn't bet that enough of their engineers are...

    Tesla Powered Truck Thoughts

As the OP, I read the 1st 2 pages of the vast 'Truck' thread. It was started a few years ago, and the Tesla playing field has changed considerably since it debuted. I'm also sure there's quite a bit of recent comments, but I didn't want it buried on page 35. We continually see new threads...

    Tesla Powered Truck Thoughts

If you're traveling away from home, the SpC is a great option. In light of the 'letter' though, using a local SpC may become an issue. Charging, though, at a max rate of 120kW is still limiting. OTOH, charging at 240VAC at 40 or 80 Amps will take longer. With the 70D, I'm not sure if the...

    Tesla Powered Truck Thoughts

Having driven my MS for a year now, and with more than 47,000 miles on it, I have started thinking about the usage on one of my other vehicles. It's a 2006 Dodge 3500 Turbo Diesel long bed 4 wheel drive pickup truck. Sure, it's a stretch; You could even say that if there's a connection to a...

Very Difficult decision..Canceling my Sig X reservation

I'm an owner of a MS, and a fan of Tesla vehicles, so I hate to hear that there's cancellations happening. I also have to say that I was not at the rollout, have not watched any media clips, but have been reading the comments. However, it seems to me that Tesla is maybe a bit too avant-gard...

[Resolved] Help! Having a nightmare at the delivery center

In reading this thread, I wonder why Tesla just doesn't provide the red calipers as 'included' when the spoiler option is selected. Also, during the configuration check, it could show this as an 'opted out of red calipers'. Last thought. I wonder what Tesla would charge if the red calipers...

Doug_G, I agree with your statement. That's why I included the below line in my posting. If you have any info as to the appropriate contact / address / department at the MTO, as far as sending a non-resident letter to them, or if anyone else might have a POC, I would appreciate it. I'll...

    Supercharger - Fresno, CA (6709 N Riverside, LIVE 10 Jan 2016, 10 V2 stalls)

This charger is long overdue. The Manteca SpC provides some benefit heading to the Oakhurst / Yosemite area. I have done the Oakhurst trip 3 times. 1) was to reroute through Harris Ranch, which was a considerable deviation from a direct route. 2) Utilized the Nema 14-50 at the Oakhurst...

HOV lanes access in Québec is imminent for EV drivers

I find this thread interesting. I was recently in Ontario, and have California HOV stickers on the rear end of my MS, in compliance with California registration. I'm sure most of this forum's users are aware of the meaning of BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicles) and...

    Pics/Info: Inside the battery pack

Although I have no experience with the Tesla pack, I do with EV's. Canadian CHAdeMO charging

Three months ago, I went on a trip from California to Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah. I had to charge in Boise (this was before the Boise SpC went online) and Dillon Nissan was allowing any traveler to charge at their dealership for free. They have 2 charging stations, a J1772A and a...

Will they ever make the Model S function like a Powerwall in Australia?

While I'm not sure if Tesla's outside the US would have a different rulebook, I do know it would require some work to accomplish the delivery of power out of the pack. The biggest problem that I see, is the statement in the ESA, under exclusions, which states "Negligence, misuse or abuse, such...

    LAPD getting P85D's

I am worried about response times. No, not the 'ludicrous' acceleration time, not even the top end, or the great handling. No.... I am concerned if they put the target street address into the Nav system. It will possibly route the car through Kingman, AZ to the Supercharger (before their...

Warranty about to expire! Is it worth paying $4100.00 for 80,000 more km?

With the difference between the Canadian dollar and the US dollar, I think it's a better deal in Canadian dollars. Currently, the $4100 CDN is less thsn $3000 USD, and the deductible is $about $150 per issue. A better deal, but I expect the actual $ cost will depend on which country you seek...

Did you purchase the Tesla Extended Warranty for extra 4-years/50K miles coverage?

I am in a like quandary about buying it. I have had my S85 for 11 months, and just hit 44,000 miles on it, after a 7600 mile trip from Lodi, California to North Bay, Ontario, Canada, and back. I bought the car to drive it. I think that Tesla's unorthodox car company mentality does them a...

    Supercharging letter from Tesla 8-13-2015

Since the launch of the MS, Tesla had been touting the SpC network without limitations. Tesla has been gathering steam as they have been putting out more and more MS on the road. With their success, they are now facing the same issues that other encounter. With that success, Tesla is now...

Supercharging Hypothetical #3 -- Inappropriate or not?

I think there are two 2 issues here. I think everyone basically agrees that leaving your MS in a SpC stall when it's finished charging is not cool. It's also apparent from the comments that the line is clearly drawn between those who think Spc use is unrestricted (I just raised my hand), and...

Supercharging Hypothetical #1 -- Abusive or not?

If I'm on a road trip, and the SC is full (like San Juan Capistrano, Harris Ranch, and the Fremont factory), I don't start querying the users whether they are local or not. If they were there before me, go ahead and charge, but please move your MS as soon as your charging is sufficient for...

    Supercharging letter from Tesla 8-13-2015

I'm not sure what you mean by easier on the car. Easier on the battery pack, easier on the on-board chargers, easier on the charge port connectors, easier on the driver waiting to have sufficient charge to get on the road? f you're asking me whether I think it's an issue on the battery pack...

Supercharging Hypothetical #1 -- Abusive or not?

Let's not base SC use/abuse on your personal opinion, but on what Tesla was stating, since the SC rollout commenced. Tesla stated that SC enabled long distance driving, but also stated that SC charging on SC-enabled MS's is free and forever. Making on-the;fly or after-the-fact changes to...

I appreciate the faster charging at the SC, even with the 80 Amp HPWC at home. Let's for just a minute, look at this from another angle. If you are not fiscally concerned about Tesla ownership, and think you'll just replace your existing Tesla with a new one, whenever the factory warranty...

Supercharging Hypothetical #2 -- Abusive or not?

I agree, and reiterate that this became the issue when EM made his comment. When the SC network was rolled out, there were no 'use or abuse' scenario's mentioned, or even alluded to. I'd even suspect that EM was probably relieved when the MS sales accelerated (after Tesla made good on...
