Non-Tesla recommendations for 2nd cheaper EV

Old-style cruise control is a minimum speed, so if you press the accelerator it goes faster, but if you release it, it goes no slower. I guess this is what you have. But how about the max-speed mode that almost all new (since 2012) cars in Europe have, where you can release the accelerator to...

Non-Tesla recommendations for 2nd cheaper EV

It kills me how easy this would be for Tesla to fix, but they don't because they have the FSD religion.

Tesla removes regenerative braking strength option

I would certainly depress the clutch in a manual if I realized I was on ice. So I can understand people are worried about not being able to switch off regen in the snow. We just have to hope the "reverse ABS" is so good that that's not needed in a Tesla with full time regen. But that's a...

    Ploughing Snow...

Sure. But on summer tyres (these are not winter or all-year tyres) you will still have a bad time.
  5. Haddock

Do I have a heat pump?

No way to retrofit. You can watch Sandy Munro's YouTube posts on the octovalve. It's a complete revamp of the way heating and cooling of the cabin and battery work. Would be a huge job to change a car from the old system to the new one.

    Ploughing Snow...

On summer tyres he doesn't have a chance. Even on winter tyres it would get really hard once the snow depth exceeds the ground clearance. At some point you are just building up a pile of snow at the front of the car and that doesn't work.

Tesla removes regenerative braking strength option

For example if I'm passing a pedestrian crossing, and I have a green, the pedestrian has a red. I don't want to slow down and prepare to stop, but I would normally move my foot to the brake to be ready in case the pedestrian is an idiot.

Tesla removes regenerative braking strength option

I'll miss this. When I see something strange near the road, I move my right foot to the brake pedal. I do this to be able to brake faster if it turns out the strange thing is a moose or something. That doesn't mean I want to decelerate with max regen. I guess I could start driving like an...

What do you miss about your previous car?

Having my car bong at me is the last thing I want. Seriously, that's the worst. The feature I want is it just silently doesn't go faster.

What do you miss about your previous car?

I'm also upgrading from a Zoe, and I'm going to miss this. Sad thing is that it's such an easy thing for Tesla to add.

    Saved by the Tesla cameras

I think the question is what happens next. The insurers put up premiums or dump customers because they expect to have to pay out more for future accidents. So for them the question is statistical: Is someone who lies about what happened more or less likely to be in another accident soon? The...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

There have been several suggestions to rename Autopilot. I have a suggestion: "A tipsy teenager that will hold your steering wheel for you". Some samples, paraphrased or lightly altered from this thread. "Recently drove from LA to Vegas and the tipsy teenager was able to steer for me almost...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I think this is very likely and fits with the "driver lost control" description from the police. But my guess is that the AP2 didn't act up, it was just sticking to its lane, and the driver suddenly realized he was leaving the 101, when he wanted to continue. He disengages by turning the...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

This is pretty poor signage. For comparison, here's what something like that looks like in the UK. Note the clear road markings. This is Spaghetti Junction in the UK and the two left lanes are exiting. They are separated by road markings so people don't change between the two exiting...

    Wait for AWD?

Regen is almost never limited by grip, so that would be a very minor difference. On the other hand the AWD is going to be offered with air suspension, and some people like that.

    Jaguar I-PACE vs TM3

Not great at all, compared with the Model 3 value of 0.23 In addition the I-Pace is both wider (2011mm vs 1933mm with folded mirrors) and higher (1565mm vs 1440mm). Taken together this means it's almost certain to use rather more power at speed, which translates to a lower range on the...

    Rear seat pass through

I'm pretty sure 60% is not enough for two teenagers. It wouldn't be enough for two smaller kids under 4'5" either because they have to sit on a booster cushion here and you won't fit two of those in 60% either.
  20. Haddock

    Rear seat pass through

It would be an option. I'm not asking you to pay for it.

    Rear seat pass through

I went to the Century City mall in LA and sat in VIN 2421. Now I want it even more. I'm a first day reservation holder from Denmark so I probably have a year to wait, still. One of the few things I missed was an option to open the middle of the back seat so I can transport long items while...

    Reuters: 90% Tesla defects

This is the critical part for me. I'm really looking forward to my reserved-on-the-first-day Model 3, and don't much care about panel gaps, which is what 90% of this thread is about (my current Renault Zoe doesn't have great gaps). But I really care about Tesla being financially sustainable...

Petition to add tow hitch to Model 3

Here's part of the explanation: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/tow-me-down-1609112611/1609771499/+ballaban The TLDR is that US trailers put much more weight on the car (10-15%), whereas EU trailers are more balanced (4-7%). This means you can go faster with a trailer in the US, whereas in the...

Petition to add tow hitch to Model 3

I think actually sedans are on the decline everywhere. It's just that in Europe people move more to wagons, and in the US they move to crossovers. As far as I can work out the difference mainly cultural. That is, there are some technical differences (crossover rides higher and is a little...

Petition to add tow hitch to Model 3

When I buy stuff from Ikea here they offer a free trailer rental. Super offer, but useless to all us electric car owners who don't have Model X. I just don't understand this attitude that a pickup would be better for towing, therefore no hook is needed on the Model 3. The existence of a even...

    What about the tow hitch?

I literally don't know anybody with a pickup truck. But I see from OCDetailing's latest video that it has a lot of space in the back. So next time I have a pile of wet autumn leaves to take to the local dump, I'll just pop them in there!

Blog TMC Member Offers Tesla Model 3 First Look

    Modern cruise control

Having the car beep at me is really not what I want. Beeping is super annoying. TACC... so complicated TACC in the rain | Tesla Perhaps this will help explain why I like it. On my route into town there's a long stretch with a limit of 60km/h. I set the limiter to 70, which means I don't get...

Yes this is annoying. It's a lot less annoying in a car with manual transmission, and a complete non-issue in an electric car.

    Modern cruise control

According to What is a speed limiter? EuroNCAP give you points for having the limiter. That makes me hopeful that Tesla will add it too. Modern cruise control

This is going to be the only thing that's worse than my cheap Renault Zoe - here's the button that switches the cruise control between constant speed and max speed. It would be such a simple software update for Tesla - to bring them up to par with other non-autonomous cars.
  39. Haddock

    Modern cruise control

I don't want traffic aware cruise control. I'll be aware of the traffic. I just want to be able to set (and easily change) a max speed. This is really simple stuff. Doesn't cost extra from Renault, Toyota, Audi (cars I have driven recently).
  40. Haddock

    Modern cruise control

I really want this to be controllable without letting go of the steering wheel. By modern I mean with a "max" mode like pretty much every new European car. I love the max speed mode, where you set the limiter to your preferred speed and then just keep a safe distance to the other cars. When...

    What about the tow hitch?

I Europe, if the manufacturer has not certified the vehicle for a hitch then you can't add one. Not insurable, not legal, won't pass inspection. It's a big deal for me. I don't need to tow huge things, but I need a hitch. It's a major reason to wait for the Model 3.

    Fatal autopilot crash, NHTSA investigating...

That's attractive on the face of it, but you really have to be careful what you are comparing with. The relevant comparison is not to all miles driven, because the Tesla is a very safe car when it actually crashes. So to know if AP is helping in a statistical sense you should really be...
