Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

I suspect using stalks with a yoke is much more cumbersome than with a wheel, since a yoke doesn't guide your hand to where the stalks are when the yoke isn't in its horizontal position. Hence my theory above that the yoke was the original reason why they removed the stalks (and just didn't put...

FSD V12 (end to end AI)

I think they are jumping to conclusions. Moving a feature from "coming soon" neither means that it's out of beta (others such as Autosteer, NoA, Summon etc. are still in beta after all these years), nor that v12 is imminent. My guess is they just changed it because "autosteer on city streets"...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

I remember that, but it doesn't really explain the switch from stalks to buttons/touchscreen (which are still input, just ergonomically worse).

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

It's really annoying when doing a 3-point turn, or when having to switch multiple times between forward and reverse while getting into/out of a tight parallel parking spot. Has Musk ever said anything about the rationale behind this change? Some say cost savings, but given that the stalks were...

    v11.4.7 (2023.7.30) auto-wipers seem drastically worse

That's for the washer. Can you trigger a single wipe like you could with the stalk button (that also brought up the manual wiper selection on the screen)? That saved me many times when the auto wiper didn't work. Also, another button you have to look down to operate. I think the decision to...

    v11.4.7 (2023.7.30) auto-wipers seem drastically worse

Perfectly timed with the reveal of the Model 3 Highland, which appears to no longer have a way to activate the wipers without using the touchscreen (the turn signal stalk is gone).

FSD V12 (end to end AI)

Hallucinations can also happen due to noise in the training data or ambiguous statistical patterns. The problem is that currently there is no systematic way to identify the exact cause of specific hallucinations in models of non-trivial size, which means there is also no systematic way to fix...

FSD V12 (end to end AI)

I'd be happy if my car to could learn to reliably detect that it's raining, like those $10 rain sensors that other carmakers have used for decades.

FSD V12 (end to end AI)

That seems like a very charitable interpretation. The engineering team reports to Musk. He has more insight into the real state of affairs than any other non-engineer. And yet he kept repeating the same claims again and again. I think the reason is pretty obvious: the Robotaxi vision is a large...

FSD V12 (end to end AI)

I find it quite interesting that they say they are "trying to solve the challenges", in light of the fact that their CEO has said since at least 2016 that it was "a solved problem" (and started charging customers thousands of dollars for the product).

Elon: One-time FSD transfers for purchases in Q3

Pretty sure that section wasn't there when I posted this. Anyway, it's still strange that the other paragraph states matter-of-factly that "the FSD capability will be removed and transferred to your new vehicle" without time restriction.

FSD V12 (end to end AI)

That could mean that they are technologically ahead, or just that they are more reckless in releasing unfinished functionality ... Measured by Musk's promises, what they released simply doesn't work. Here's a quote I ran across earlier today: " The car will be able to find you in a parking...

Just noticed this on Tesla's trade-in support page: No mention of this being a limited-time offer. Could it be that they are making this permanent?

Elon: One-time FSD transfers for purchases in Q3

Here's an interesting tidbit: apparently Tesla has very recently started delivering Model Y pre-wired for the new radar (but without the radar module itself) and a different version of the FSD computer: No doubt that will make recent buyers before that change happy. What a mess. And limiting...

Tesla promoting self-driving video was staged

I was skeptical from the start and originally didn't buy FSD when I got my 3 (only EAP, which I don't regret). But then I got suckered in when the FSD upgrade was briefly on sale at a steep discount (in early 2019 for $2k, if I remember correctly), telling myself that at least the included...

Tesla promoting self-driving video was staged

I think the worst thing about this video is that the disclaimer at the beginning, as well as Musk's accompanying tweet, are outright lies. If this had been framed as aspirational or a vision, it would be a different story. But it was clearly meant to imply that the functionality already existed...

Cashback & Bonus Points for Supercharging and other EV chargers

Tesla superchargers and other EV chargers such as Chargepoint trigger the "online shopping" category of the Bank of America "customized cash" card. This means 3% cashback minimum and 5.25% if you have "platinum honors" status (e.g. by keeping $100k+ in investments at Merrill Edge). No annual...

    FSD Beta 10.69

Try a scroll wheel reboot. After I updated to 2022.44.30.5, I also had the button saying "you're in the queue". I then did a reboot, and now I have the FSD Beta on/off switch (off by default). I have never applied for the FSD Beta. It seems the state of the system just isn't displayed properly...

Check this out to see how Carplay could look on the Tesla: Here's a brief description of how it works: https://appleinsider.com/articles/22/01/15/developer-hack-puts-carplay-on-tesla-using-a-raspberry-pi

No CarPlay is a deal breaker. WTF?

I'd love to have Carplay, primarily for audiobooks and podcasts. Also, the Tesla Spotify app is not great compared to the phone app (dynamic playlists often don't update properly, and the bitrate is limited to 96kbps).

V11 - How to turn on seat heaters without turning on climate?

Exactly. CO2 concentrations over 1000 ppm can cause drowsiness, which is obviously not a good thing for the driver. If you turn the fan off completely, the concentration rises quickly to that level in modern cars (even worse when more than one occupant is in the car).
  33. Eno Deb

V11 - How to turn on seat heaters without turning on climate?

Leave the climate control on, turn off Auto and A/C, set temperature to "LO" to prevent the heater from turning on. This way you get a fan-only mode that uses very little energy. It's a bit annoying, but driving with no fan at all isn't a good idea anyway since the CO2 concentration in the cabin...

To FSD or not FSD….that is the question…

You said "reliably navigate". It's nowhere near what I would call reliable. If Tesla can't even do limited highway driving without constant supervision, what makes you think they can do it for more complex scenarios like city driving? "My fantasy system"? I have no idea what you are talking...

To FSD or not FSD….that is the question…

A system that occasionally tries to drive you into bridge pillars or oncoming traffic is not reliable. Personally, I would gladly forget about what Tesla calls FSD in favor of an L3 version of the current Autopilot that would reliably handle long highway drives while letting me read or watch a...

To FSD or not FSD….that is the question…

Take it from someone who bought it: if you expect something resembling level 5 autonomy, FSD is a complete waste. After years of promises they aren't even close. I think it's likely that they will never get there with the current hardware (sensor suite and AI accelerator chip). I regret spending...

    Stuck in 2021.32.22?

Finally got the 36.5.1 update after being stuck on 32 for a while. Was hoping for the 40.5 version because of navigation waypoints, but with the reports of increased phantom braking on Autopilot with the 40 verisons, maybe it's better this way ...

FSD Transfer - NO - but Tesla says it's really OK

The thing is, you (and I) probably paid less for EAP + "old" FSD than people with newer cars paid (and are still paying) for "new" FSD, so I'm not sure I buy the notion that we are the bigger victims. ;-) The reason why I think that early buyers are probably more "deserving" of a one-time...

FSD Transfer - NO - but Tesla says it's really OK

Perhaps they could allow for a one-time transfer for those who paid thousands and never got the promised features. I'm not even asking for actual "full self driving" anymore (doubt that will happen this decade), but when I got my car in 2018, it was supposed to also do things like park itself...

New tweet from Tesla: will sell their own CCS adaptor “soon” in North America

According to the store page, the European CCS 2 adapter has a maximum charging rate ("Max. Laderate") of 142 kW. Obviously it depends on the SoC and nominal battery voltage how much can be achieved in practice. In any case, it will be significantly faster than the Chademo or Setec adapters. I'm...

    Autonomous Car Progress

Intel is actually outsourcing the manufacturing of some of their designs to TSMC (e.g. the new discrete XE GPUs). Their packaging technology can mix and match chips from their own fabs and external suppliers. Wouldn't suprise me if TSMC or maybe Samsung also manufactured MobilEye's chips.

    Safety Score

Do we know that they have collected the data that they are using for the score all along without telling us? I would consider that a massive breach of privacy. If they haven't, they probably don't have a whole lot of data yet. Can Tesla Insurance customers outside of California opt in to be scored?
  46. Eno Deb

    Safety Score

That's more likely because California state law (Prop. 103) prohibits insurance companies from using telematics to set premiums. They must be calculated based on safety record, length of driving experience, and miles driven annually.

    Safety Score

Credit ratings are in large part based on past behavior. E.g. missed payments and bankruptcies have the largest negative impact on credit scores. For a car insurance the equivalents would be past minor and major accidents. At the end of the day, credit and insurance scoring models are designed...

    Safety Score

And do you think it would be fair by your insurance company to now raise your rate based on, say, accelerometer data, even though you have a stellar 20-year safety record?
  49. Eno Deb

    Safety Score

We are far away from AI having the I to understand context. Until then, these ratings are at best based on statistics. But statistics are just that, and don't say a lot about an individual. The only metric that should matter for an insurance company is how often you are involved in collisions.
  50. Eno Deb

    Safety Score

That assumes that these scores accurately reflect the driving safety, which I don't think they do. Context matters, and that cannot be captured by vehicle sensors. I drive super carefully when other cars are around, but sometimes have "some fun" when the situation allows it (e.g. empty country...
