Series 1 HPWC issues with 2018 model S

How did you request the replacement? Service request on the car? Call Tesla customer service?

Series 1 HPWC issues with 2018 model S

Let me add another data point... it's probably not the MCU - the MCU doesn't handle charger communication, it just manages it. Our 2016 Model X had a charger (the box in the car) failure and had to be replaced with the latest generation. After that, the car has refused to charge on my gen 1...

    Force charging?

I eventually got it to work by setting climate to HI, draining it to 236, then set it back to 100 pct. The car is stupidly waiting until it drops below 90 percent before it will allow the car to charge again. Just when I think Tesla has a freaking clue, they do something so stupid like this.
  4. FlasherZ

    Force charging?

Neither app nor car settings cause it to charge. The car shows the setting at 100 pct but will not start charging.
  5. FlasherZ

    Force charging?

Doesn't matter if you lower/raise the charging at all, I've moved it to 50 pct and back again in the car and the app.
  6. FlasherZ

    Force charging?

In the olden days, you'd simply force charging by removing the charge connector and reapplying it. Not anymore. Model X (Model S also does this) has 100 pct range of 266, current range of 241, but when you plug it in, it still says "charge complete". I need those final 25 mi (10 pct roughly)...

    Model S REST API

Model X uses 340 Wh/mi as the power efficiency standard for Model X (or did, back in 2016, prior to the new drivetrain).

    Model S REST API

Interesting - mine was pretty reliable until this most recent change between Aug-Sept, on all the cars... ah well, it really didn't do much except to allow for visualization of the car when I went back to look up stuff from my TeslaMS installation.

    Model S REST API

Both (2016 sig X with MCU1/AP1, 2018 S with MCU2/AP2.5) used to return correct option codes. Last timestamp I have of the correct option codes was August 8, 2019: next timestamp I have of the Model 3 replacement was September 13, 2019: These are from the same Model S. Not even an id_s...

    Model S REST API

Ok, so at least I know I'm not going nuts. So it seems every car via the old API is a black Model 3. It messes with my TeslaMS logging. Seems to be for all cars, S/3/X.

    Model S REST API

Hi folks, I'm a bit baffled here at the information coming in for my cars from the API. When I ask for vehicle information from the API, I'm getting a bogus set of option codes from the API. Both my midnight silver Model S and our signature red Model X return the same option_codes for a black...

2016 Model S 90D - Property Damage Claim Post Mortem

So, an update. I have settled with the other party's insurance company, and was pleasantly surprised with the information they had available. They used an appraiser who was dedicated to handling Tesla cars, and their initial settlement offer was pretty much right at the comparable that I had...

2016 Model S 90D - Property Damage Claim Post Mortem

I'm just beginning to go through this fun now. I don't think I'll have a problem with convincing the third-party insurance company to total the vehicle (they've said that just seeing the pictures, they pretty much know it's a total loss but have to wait for the formality of the inspector's...

Another Safety Tale... My Children Safe

Didn't have a USB key in it. Was frustrated that I didn't have that set up this morning. That said, I did pull some data from my logs this morning. I'm guessing the reason I didn't hit the car in front of me is that the truck had turned and the car in front had just accelerated. It appears...

Unfortunately, no, and he is so bummed about it. I was able to vote, but for some reason when he obtained his permit the DMV registration didn't make it - so we were headed to the courthouse to do same-day registration for him. We didn't leave the hospital until after 8:30 pm, after polls...

Another Safety Tale... My Children Safe

No, my original Signature car was outfitted with them but this one wasn't. Looking from the rear seats backwards, even without reinforcement I would say that kids back there would have survived, although they would be pretty damn scared! I sit straight up when I drive, the accident caused the...

Another Safety Tale... My Children Safe

Two of my sons and I were headed to the courthouse so that one of them (18) could vote for the first time. On state highway 161, I stopped behind two other vehicles, waiting for the truck to turn left into a private drive. Between 3 and 5 seconds later, with zero warning, I was hit from behind...

    AP2 / 8.1 : "Cruise Not Available"-AP intermittently not working in 17.11.{3,10} versions

Another update, and an interesting problem to go solve... last night, in the early evening (around 5:30 pm) I drove again and the same failure occurred. Driving home resulted in the same failure as well -- still no cruise. Putting 2+2 together (failures were happening at night, successes...

    AP2 / 8.1 : "Cruise Not Available"-AP intermittently not working in 17.11.{3,10} versions

Follow-up: Apparently I didn't give it enough time. Updated yesterday afternoon, drove a couple of times last night (1 hr after update, 4 hrs after update) with no cruise available. After posting the above, I went for a drive and it showed me the lines and I had cruise available again.

    AP2 / 8.1 : "Cruise Not Available"-AP intermittently not working in 17.11.{3,10} versions

Welcome to TMC! It sounds like you had a good experience and kept the ability to do high-speed AP and cruise. Bummer, may just be my car due for a hardware calibration.

    AP2 / 8.1 : "Cruise Not Available"-AP intermittently not working in 17.11.{3,10} versions

Is anyone else with AP2 on 8.1 (Model S) experiencing "Cruise Not Available"? The release notes say that while AP2 is recalibrating for the high-speed AP, that low-speed would be available. In my case, after the upgrade the car no longer sees lanes, and attempting to engage low-speed AP or...

    NEMA 14-50 on a 60 amps breaker?

If you seal things well, you don't need to use an outdoor cable. This is a bit of a gray area, but I see A/C wiring provided by NM cable punched through an exterior wall into a disconnect pretty frequently, and it passes. There are varying opinions on the technicalities associated with it...
  25. FlasherZ

    NEMA 14-50 on a 60 amps breaker?

    1) You can connect it at the panel and cap it off with a wire nut at the HPWC end. 2) No, it is not. You must replace the 60A breaker with a 50A if you pull it.
  26. FlasherZ

    Model S REST API

It does. This flag is set to "true" when the car is being worked on. It disables all remote functionality as if you turned the mobile setting off.

    New Wall Connector :)

First, we have to get terminology right... there is no such thing as a "2,2,2,8 system", so I'm making some assumptions based on what they're telling you. You cannot attach a 15A or 20A receptacle to a circuit provided by a breaker that is larger than 20A, so you can't connect the 120V loads...
  28. FlasherZ

    Upgrade old NEMA 6-20 outlet?

It did not automatically set it in this case. If you're using a 14-50 to 6-20 adapter, each time Tesla resets the charge history you'll try charging at 40A and tripping the circuit breaker. I don't recommend this approach for permanent charging because of the dangers involved.
  29. FlasherZ

    New Wall Connector :)

The most common definition is if it is considered a separate structure -- or if there's the ability to run conduit to it without having to span open air or require a trench/direct bury. An open breezeway renders it attached -- we have a local subdivision where rules on outbuildings were...
  30. FlasherZ

    New Wall Connector :)

You can't run THHN in that case, because conduit is considered wet location when outside. THWN rating is minimum for that run. Is this garage attached or detached? If detached, you can't have multiple feeds going to a detached structure, so if there's any other power in there you will have...
  31. FlasherZ

    New Wall Connector :)

200A service won't be #4 - only 100A service can be fed with #4 (copper - aluminum won't feed 100A). THHN is an individual wire - are you talking a cable assembly, or individual wires in conduit? I'm confused as to your contractor's reasoning behind aluminum wire?
  32. FlasherZ

    New Wall Connector :)

The idea is that you will rarely, if ever, run your household at 100% for long periods of time. They figure that nearly every household load is intermittent - and that clause is only applicable to an entire "dwelling unit".

    Pulling Permits for 240 install

I did point out the extremes. 9 times out of 10, it probably won't be an issue, especially if done correctly. That said, the laws tend to acknowledge this and as such the penalties if you get caught are pretty serious. It's pretty common to see $10,000 for each count, where each day...

FAQ: Home Tesla charging infrastructure Q&A

Yes, or use a junction box just prior to the 14-50 where you transition from #3 to #4. If you install the HPWC, remove the receptacle and junction box.
  35. FlasherZ

    Pulling Permits for 240 install

Do whatever you feel comfortable with based on your risk level. The situation is different in many different locales. In some locales, it's even more than a citable offense: it's a misdemeanor and is subject to jail time, one count for each day it's installed and unpermitted. If convicted, it...

    New Wall Connector :)

#4 is limited to 85A at 75 degC termination temperature, which would limit you to the 64A charging / 80A breaker setting. This is, unfortunately, a place where even a lot of electricians mess up. They're either unfamiliar with the continuous load rules and think "80A charging? Wire's good to...

Model S - HPWC (High Power Wall Connector)

Here's what I've seen... the electricians haven't read their code books, at least not in the US. They say "well, it charges at 80A, so #4 is just fine", neglecting the continuous load requirements. In the US, Tesla is aligned with the code (except for their latest #2 recommendation) and it's...

Model S - HPWC (High Power Wall Connector)

Fair enough - I was typing the response while on a horrible plane connection. A Tesla UMC may not be connected to a NEMA 14-50 receptacle with a circuit size of less than 50A. There are J1772 EVSE's that may have a 14-50 plug but a nameplate of only 30A continuous which would work on a 40A...
  41. FlasherZ

Model S - HPWC (High Power Wall Connector)

A little bit late on this, but that wiring cannot be used for a NEMA 14-50 receptacle. The NEMA 14-50 receptacle must be installed on #8 copper wire-in-conduit or #6 NM/Romex cable. Tesla charging requires a 50A circuit, and #8 NM/Romex can't do that.

Why are turnkey Solar PV systems so ridiculously overpriced?

That's exactly what they're doing. It's a co-op, originally part of the REA landscape, only serving the rural areas of our county. Ameren-IP (f/k/a Illinois Power) gets the municipalities, which is a primary factor.
  43. FlasherZ

Why are turnkey Solar PV systems so ridiculously overpriced?

A chain of gas stations in Indiana had taken out its 2-head frozen soda machines and replaced them with 4-head machines. I was the lucky recipient of a very low cost machine. I also have a bar-gun soda fountain that has juice and soda. These machines use a refrigerated "cold plate" that the...

Why are turnkey Solar PV systems so ridiculously overpriced?

Bad assumption. Two-zone Propane boiler heat, standard A/C. 4,600 sq ft. including basement. 25 year old home, insulated well. 2 Teslas + 5 refrigeration units (upright freezer, 2 refrigerators, 1 Eurocave, and 1 cold plate for soda fountain / frozen beverage machines, all relatively new)...

    What's up with HPWC?

Insulation is only a matter for SER (service-entrance) cable, whose ampacity depends on whether it's installed in insulation or not. NM cable must always be used at the 60 degC rating (which is why #2 NM/Romex cable doesn't work for an HPWC 80A install). wire-in-conduit, along with receptacles...

    What's up with HPWC?

Great to hear! Inspectors who are aware of the DIY status of a project generally look for a set of things that are frequently done wrong. In time, they'll start paying more attention to continuous loads and will be calling out some of the bigger errors out there - using #4 for an 80A charging...
  47. FlasherZ

    What's up with HPWC?

Perhaps. At least Congress fixed the major problem with it for the 2013 year. Prior to that, because it wasn't indexed to inflation, it would catch more and more people every year, and it bit me in 2012 for the infrastructure credit.

    48 Amp Charging

As Lloyd noted, no it is not. You cannot connect a 50A-rated receptacle to a 60A-rated circuit. Now, here's a situation that you can sometimes encounter: A circuit protected by a 50A breaker in the service panel has a downstream disconnect rated/fused at 60A, which then goes on to a 50A...
  49. FlasherZ

    48 Amp Charging

You need either a Tesla Wall Connector configured for a 60A circuit, or a J1772 EVSE that is capable of doing 48A or greater. The default UMC with the car may only be installed on a 50A circuit if using the NEMA 14-50 plug. NEMA 14-60 is unsupported by Tesla (and is generally not found in the...

    What's up with HPWC?

Yes, it really depends on the requirements as well. Where I live, building permits are required for new structures but there are no electrical permits or inspections (basically building permits are there to give the assessor a "to-do" item to remember to raise your taxes). As mentioned...
