Last year, they started building 2017 cars, second half of December. There were few lucky owners go got those delivered before 31st December.

You need to time your order carefully to get a 2018 VIN but still be delivered in December, but it's tricky.

No. They are just joking around.

A Tesla built on Dec 30 2017 is no different from one built on Jan 1 2018. It doesn't matter. Tesla doesn't pay any attention to the traditional car "model year" marketing silliness.

It's more for resale purposes. Though a Dec 2017 model may exactly be the same as a Jan 2018 model, the perception of the general population may lead to the seller selling the car at a slightly higher value.

It's not for tax purpose, to get the $7,500 on the 2017 year instead of 2018?

The tax credit is based on 'put into service' per the IRS. Which is whatever you want it to be because: Is it the title date? The registration date? The delivery date?

Tons of discussion on this in other threads. I'd schedule it so there's no chance for error and not worry about the 'model year'. But that's me.
