Anyone able to order non-leather steering wheel?

I am seeing some cases of people able to special order a non-leather steering wheel for the model 3. Just wondering if there are any more cases of people doing this? My local store said they can't do it for the model 3 but could for a model s.

The price jump for the S though is fairly big and I kind of like the fun driving experience of the 3.

Thanks.

I thought everything was "vegan leather"?!

I've heard conflicting things about that. Two or three Tesla salespeople have told me, in person, that the steering wheel is wrapped in faux ("vegan") leather; however, statements from Tesla corporate, and from Elon Musk, suggest that the steering wheel's wrappings are real animal-based leather. Mostly these statements have come in shareholder calls, where animal-rights groups have gotten in to press Tesla on the issue of leather in their cars. The last I've heard from these (from an event a few months ago), Tesla has offered faux leather alternatives as an "off-menu" option on some cars (presumably the S and X, but maybe not the 3), and is working on replacing animal leather with faux leather on all its steering wheels, but the standard offering is a steering wheel wrapped in animal leather. For years, though, Tesla's seats and other trim items have been faux leather; AFAIK, the steering wheel remains the only thing in current-production Teslas with animal leather. I recall one video of such an event where Musk also offered a caveat that Tesla vehicles use glues which may be animal-based.

I tend to accept what Musk has stated in shareholder calls over what random salespeople say. That said, it's possible that Tesla has made a change recently and without much fanfare.

If you're a vegetarian or a vegan who wants to eliminate leather from your car, AFAIK your only choice today is to go pretty down-scale. IIRC, the lowest-trim version of the Nissan Leaf lacks leather, but when I looked into this a few months ago, every other EV on the market (including every Leaf except the lowest-trim version) has at least a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Most have leather seats, too, at least on higher-trim versions. I haven't looked too closely at non-EVs recently, but a few years ago, leather-wrapped steering wheels were universal in all but the lowest-trim vehicles. It was definitely unavoidable in the 2017 Chevy Volt I leased about three years ago.

At the last two shareholder meetings the last question was about this.

"A steering wheel actually has to be very hardy," Musk said. "We have a lot of oil and sweat and stuff on our hands, and it gets kind of nasty if you don't have the right surface treatments on the material. It's an easier proposition to solve for seats than it is for the steering wheel."

The new steering wheel will be released "soon," Musk said.

Cypho the only issue is then I would have bought the leather even if I replaced it. I want to avoid the buying part of it. But really appreciate your suggestion.

Even if you get a vegan steering wheel from Tesla you have still used up a leather one. The car will come with the leather one and it will be swapped out at a service center. (At least that is my understanding.) Who knows what they do with the slightly used steering wheels..

That would be if I tried to push them to do it now.

If I wait eventually its going to be vegan from the factor. Elon mentinoed that would be coming 'soon' as posted above. I also heard from an inside source they were developing a material that could withstand the heating element in the S and X and that is one reason for the delays.

The frustration continues. After my store agent said that he requested the vegan version and I got a delivery date now he's not sure and is trying to find out if I did get the vegan steering wheel (after I called to ask him to make sure that was the case).

My delivery specialist is totally useless and knows nothing and tells me to just talk to the sales agent.

if you're going too tweet out that the Tesla is now leather free and I order after your Tweet that then to say you may not get it is just ridiculous.

I will not take delivery if they don't give me the non leather version.
