The car was plugged in, so the charge port door was open.

Went to grab something out of the back of the car, and when the rear hatch closed, it somehow made contact with the charge port door causing it to snap off.

Tesla replaced it for free, so no big deal, but I’m curious if anyone else has had the same issue.

Perhaps, and admittedly I didn’t see it make contact, but the second the hatch closed the charge port door fell off and there was a sound like something snapped
I've opened my hatch while plugged in plenty of times, like @Yelobird said, the hatch isn't close enough to be the issue.

It's more likely you snagged and snapped it with whatever it was you were taking out of the cargo area.
