Auto defogging turns on randomly

I have the climate on my M3 set on Auto (72 degrees). The screen will display "Auto defogging" even though the windshield is clear and it's a sunny day. Also, there's a tapping noise when the heater is on. These occur randomly and not at the same time. Any suggestions? This isn't critical; just irritating.

Seems like this was a change on the most recent software update. The car tries harder to keep the windshield from fogging up. It does seem random at times.

Is the tapping all the time or just at the start? Could just be expansion as the materials heat up with the heater on.

They replaced the cabin air filter, and I haven't seen the defogging pop-up as often. They want me to take a video when the tapping occurs. Incidentally, the car has been "recalibrating" since they replaced the filter 4 days ago, so I can't use cruise control or autosteer. I don't know what that's about. Thanks for your response
