The disappointment with this announcement was likely due to the fact that Tesla seemed to imply that this would be a 3-row vehicle (standard) and if you wanted to have a 3rd row, you now had to pay extra. But considering that not everyone wanted a 3rd row, it makes sense to have it as a paid-for option.

Alternatively, you can view bypassing the third row as getting a discount off the standard price. All in the perspective :).
 
In all fairness, and to agree with bonnie above, Tesla (and Elon) have been fairly consistent in saying Model X would cost "low single digit percentages" above a comparably equipped Model S. Thus comparison to three-row Model S pricing would seem reasonable for three-row Model X.
