California Purchase Laws my have just ruined my MS85 AP1 purchase!

Just to clarify (because you may very well mean 2018), did you take delivery between 1/1/18-1/3/18? Or did you actually mean in 2017? I asked the OA about moving the car to a 'free' delivery region and catching a flight to take delivery and she said it would still cost $1,000 for them to ship it from Fremont. So I feel as though they've changed their policies to prevent circumvention. Because I too, like you, would enjoy that road trip back home!

Sorry, yes, meant 2017 - took delivery in October. At that point they gave me the options of Tempe or Las Vegas for free. I would still push and see what they can do for you...at the 11th hour, they called and said they had a new program and could ship it to my house for free - but I would have lost the walk-through with the delivery specialist (and the option to cure any defects, as you had to sign that you were taking delivery as-is), and also had already bought the airline tickets so we still flew out to AZ.

@NateGordonJr
Hopefully things will work out and you'll be able to purchase a Model S soon. They really are great cars.

I guess it's question of numbers -- or more aptly in this case: dollars. I have to believe the tax revenue gleaned from sales of cars in CA is on a different order magnitude from the boost to the local tourism industry from someone coming in from out of state to pick purchase a car in CA.

CA already has a very robust tourist industry to begin with.. they don't need the odd Tesla buyer to come in and spend on the local economy. they have scores of people who do that already as tourists.

It makes sense to me, and I think those pesky politicians have a good handle on what is better for their wallets. But thats just MNSHO.

Still, I too believe that CA should allow people to register in their own state and pay sales tax there.
FIFY ;)

Heard back from the OA I used and yep, it's a new policy. either 1K to Vegas or 2K for the full ride to Texas.

@Sprandt23 @LCR1 reached out to his OA personally, and he confirmed that this is a new policy. Trust me, I wanted that car tremendously and she would not budge. Congrats to those of you who were able to finagle your way into a free delivery and avoid the Cali dominion because those days are long gone! ;)

Well....I couldn't say *free* ;)
By the time you add in airfare for two, tour of Taliesin West, hotel in Sedona, meals etc - I think we came in under $2000...but it was a great mini vacation!!

Hey, all Tesla promised you was that you wouldn't have to pay for delivery (or pay sales tax in a state where you don't reside). They never mentioned how you'd get there or where you'd go after you left the facility. That's none of their business:D

And best of all - $0 in 'gas' money on the 1800 mile drive home!!
This right here is what I'm most looking forward to!! I keep telling myself everytime I go to fill-up (once a week:rolleyes:), soon you'll never have to do this again.. "Oh the places you'll go..."
